Meredith Owen discovered her love for interior design early on, drawn to the way beautiful spaces can shape how we live and feel. After earning her degree in interior design, she began her career in 2006 and quickly rose to lead designer, contributing to some of Austin’s most notable residential projects. In 2016, with over a decade of high-end experience, Meredith founded Meredith Owen Interiors — driven by a vision to create homes that are both elevated and deeply personal. Today, she leads a talented team with warmth, creativity, and intention, guiding each project from concept to completion. Known for her approachable yet refined aesthetic, Meredith blends intuition with expertise to design spaces that reflect her clients’ lifestyles, stories, and dreams. Andrew Joseph: How do you approach a new design project?
Meredith Owen: First, I get to know our client. Are they jetting off to Europe every other month, or are they juggling homework, soccer practice, and a dog who thinks the sofa is his? Maybe their calendar is full of dinner parties… or maybe they are empty nesters soaking up the design compass. They tell me what truly matters to them so I can create a home that doesn’t just look amazing but functions beautifully for their life. I believe the best homes aren’t just styled, they’re lived in and loved every single day.
AJ: How do you stay creative and inspired?
MO: For me, creativity needs breathing room. My job pulls me in a hundred directions a day, so I’ve learned that intentional downtime isn’t optional, it’s essential for me. I recharge best in the quiet moments of life: yoga, getting lost in a good book, doodling, walking in the fresh air, or jotting thoughts in my journal. When I give my brain permission to slow down, that’s when the magic happens. Ideas show up I never would’ve found in the middle of my to-do list. Inspiration doesn’t always shout; I’ve found it often whispers… You just must create the space to hear it.

A restrained palette lets the materiality shine, with the marble acting as both backdrop and statement.
AJ: What’s your favorite cocktail?
MO: Skinny Margarita with Lalo Tequila!
AJ: What is your favorite aspect of your job?
MO: Hands down, it’s our clients; we truly have the best clients. I love getting to know them, hearing their stories, and picking up on all the little details that make them who they are. It’s like piecing together a puzzle until I can see exactly how to create a home that feels like them. The real reward is watching them light up when they step into a space that’s beautiful, personal, and built to be loved for years to come. That moment never gets old.

A moody mauve cabinetry palette leans into its depth, softened by the glow of fluted sconces that feel almost jewelry-like.
AJ: What is the most important skill for a successful designer?
MO: I think the most important skill for a successful designer is knowing you are also part investigator, part therapist, and part magician. It’s about truly listening to clients, collaborating with them, and making them feel heard every step of the way. I’d say organization is a close second because no matter how inspired the vision, it takes serious behind-the-scenes organization to pull off a space that feels effortless.
AJ: What’s the weirdest thing a client has ever asked you?
MO: A working cannon! Lol
AJ: Best advice you’d give your teenage self?
MO: Be yourself and believe that the path you are on will bring you everything you are dreaming of!
