This Artist’s Botanical Ceramics Will Inspire Your Inner Designer

With her latest body of work, “Tropicalia,” artist Kiara Matos is paying tribute to her home country of Venezuela. Inspired by the tropical birds and botany she grew up around, the wall art is meant to be mixed and matched, nudging our inner designer’s creative side.

Matos’ installation for the 2019 Architectural Digest Show.

Matos has been making custom ceramics for over 20 years.

“After a good number of years I have developed a wide glaze palette,” Matos says on her website. “I like to use strong contrasts between colors and textures. My shapes tend to be simple, they are a canvas for my often intricate glaze application.”

The porcelain glaze is applied one pattern at a time, creating a uniquely smooth and defined look.

“Venezuela is a colorful and tropical country, with a vast midcentury modern architectural infrastructure,” Matso says. “These three aspects have always inspired my work and, along with my techniques for shaping and glazing, make the work what it is.”
