Maker Monday: An Aspire Exclusive Interview With Lazzoni

Os Berke Kababulut is the Lazzoni US Coordinator, responsible for some of the hottest designs used in interior design overhauls. Four generations of Lazzonis have thrived within the design house, leaving a lasting impression that champions their brand today. Things look much different now than they did in 1897, creating an entirely new design style and each piece bringing a certain luxury to their surroundings. Their unique Italian-inspired midcentury designs are sure to stand out. For this week’s Maker Monday, Os Berke Kababulut of Lazzoni.

Andrew Joseph: What would your dream project or dream client be right now?
Os Berke Kababulut: Eco-friendly resorts. Six Senses Con Dao in Vietnam is an amazing example of luxury meeting with a serious commitment to the environment. We had the pleasure of working with Six senses in Istanbul at the Historic Kocatas Mansion. No other brand does a better job at restoring, protecting, and enhancing the local environment. It would be a great pleasure to work with them again at possibly one of their future resorts.

AJ: What might the design world look like in 10 years?
OBK: With the current news about the Metaverse, it is quite hard to predict how design will shape. However, it is certain that there will be a whole new design climate. As people have already started buying land in these digital worlds, they will need digital architects and designers to create their online “sanctuaries.” Even though I cannot say I am a big supporter of the whole digitalization movement, I know that it is inevitable to a certain degree.

AJ: How do you define beauty?
OBK: Simple and natural. You can see this in Lazzoni’s classics and even our new collections too. We believe that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, as Davinci said. It is easy to make a space beautiful by filling it with arts and fancy furniture, however it is quite the challenge to do it with a simplistic approach. You must pick and choose every detail with care as there would be much more attention on each and every design element in the space.

AJ: Favorite piece of clothing you own?
OBK: A silver bracelet that used to be owned by a royal family member of the Lazika kingdom. This is where the brand name comes from, our ancestors were part of a pre-biblical ethnic tribe, the “Laz” people. I do not go anywhere without it. It helps me remind me of my roots and where I came from.

AJ: Has there been a shift in what clients are requesting since COVID?
OBK: There has. COVID has affected our way of life. Our clients have been investing a lot into their homes as they became (forcefully) where we work, entertain, and relax. It is hard to capture a design that fulfills all these aspects of life, especially if you are working with a limited amount of space in Metropolitans. However, with our multi-functioning designs and products, we can fulfill this need in a smart and sophisticated way.

AJ: What’s a new hobby/skill that you have learned recently?
OBK: I still have a long way to go but I recently started to learn how to fly airplanes. It has been a long-time dream of mine, and a nightmare of my mother’s… To be honest, I fear heights, so I thought, what is the best way to overcome that fear…? It gives you a whole new perspective as you see the world from a completely different angle. You get a glimpse of true freedom…
