How Timbur Is Marrying High-Tech Design With Handcrafted Ingenuity

Ezra and Ania Ardolino met in college when he was studying architecture, and she, wildlife biology. A batch of years and three daughters later – after Ania worked in pharmaceuticals and Ezra taught design and digital fabrication at Cornell and Pratt – the couple now runs TIMBUR, a groundbreaking digital fabrication studio.

Timbur started small in New Jersey. “In 2009, I bought a CNC – a computer numerical control machine – and put it in my suburban garage in Atlantic Highlands,” notes Ezra. By 2013, he and Ania had purchased their first robot. “We buy them secondhand from the automotive industry and repurpose them,” explains Ezra.

Their sturdy Stack Seat is constructed from a plywood cylinder that is rotated forward with a machined seat scoop for comfort, while the Stack Stool can double as a side table.

With pieces crafted using the studio’s signature stack lamination process, clients can make use of the Pantone Matching System of colors by number for discovering the ideal shade to enhance their home decor. (Shown here, a juicy orange palette from the last Design Miami. But who knows? You might want the Stack Stool in Teal, or perhaps in the Pantone 2022 color of the year: 17-3938 Very Peri).

In support of the LGBTQ+ community this Pride month, Ezra took this stacking process to new bounds to create the PRIDE bench. The slightly altered fabrication method builds up surfaces and volumes from individually fabricated, stack laminated “strip” components to achieve its uniquely-formed, color-packed qualities. The PRIDE bench will be auctioned off on June 28th – and Timbur will be donating a portion of sales to The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ youths.

Kicking off at 12pm ET, interested U.S. participants can place bids until midnight through Timbur’s Instagram account (@timburllc). Bidding will begin at $200.00. And for more from Ezra and Ania, Timbur products are available through Tuleste Factory, an art and design gallery in Chelsea, NYC.
