Andrew Joseph: What inspired you to become a designer?
Nicolette Renbarger: From a very young age, my creativity was not just nurtured but also celebrated by my parents. They constantly engaged me in art projects, laying the foundation for my creative exploration. It was my father — a master craftsman — who imparted to me an appreciation for the intricacy of construction. Under his guidance, I began to envision and dream up creations, not just for their aesthetic appeal but for their functional ingenuity as well. This deep-rooted fascination with innovative design and creative problem-solving made my choice to pursue a degree in interior design a natural one. It wasn’t merely a career path – it felt like a calling.

AJ: Can you describe your design philosophy in three words?
NR: My design philosophy is anchored in the principles of functionality, client-centricity, and innovation, all expressed through a unique blend of maximalized layered design.

AJ: Can you tell us about a design trend you are excited about?
NR: I’m excited about Artisanal Everything. There’s a growing appreciation for bespoke, artisanal pieces that showcase the skill of human hands. This reflects a desire for handcrafted bespoke items like ceramic tiles, wood furniture, and glass pieces, emphasizing the beauty and uniqueness of handmade imperfections while celebrating sustainability.

AJ: How do you stay creative and inspired?
NR: I foster creativity and inspiration by acknowledging and respecting the natural fluctuations of the creative process. This includes periods of low creativity, which, for me, are the precursors to bursts of inspiration. By prioritizing a balanced and healthy lifestyle, I ensure that I’m ready when creativity strikes. Travel and outdoor adventures also provide enriching new experiences and perspectives that I can bring to my work.

AJ: What was the last book you read and how did it inspire you?
NR: Reading “Exploring ‘Palm Beach, Mar-a-Lago, and the Rise of America’s Xanadu’” by Les Standiford has been incredibly inspiring for my PhD studies in historic preservation, particularly as I focus on the rich architectural and social history of Palm Beach. The book delves into the transformation of Palm Beach from a largely uninhabited land into a symbol of American luxury and exclusivity, led by visionaries like Henry Flagler and later magnates such as Marjorie Merriweather Post, who built the iconic Mar-a-Lago.

The narrative weaves together the development of this exclusive enclave with stories of ambition, wealth, and sometimes scandal, providing a comprehensive backdrop that highlights the importance of preserving such historically significant sites. It offers an insightful look into the Mediterranean Revival style popularized by Addison Mizner and the social dynamics that shaped Palm Beach into what it is today.

AJ: What is your favorite aspect of your job?
NR: Reliance on creativity and teamwork is the most fulfilling aspect of my job. And I appreciate that no two days are alike, each bringing its own set of unique challenges. Collaborating with clients and other trade professionals to find the best solutions not only brings a sense of achievement but also highlights the dynamic and interactive nature of the design business.
