How and when did you meet?
We met while studying at Evergreen State College in Olympia, instantly bonding over a deep love for nature and innovative design.
How long have you been in business together?
After graduating, we returned to California, joining Alex’s family firm, Rottmayer Design + Build, as designers and project managers. Further immersed in our shared passion for architecture, creating one-of-a-kind designs, and being involved with every aspect of the process, we created Hommeboys in 2018 to encompass our creative evolution.
This or that…
Are you a morning person or nocturnal?
Austin: Nocturnal.
Alex: Neither! I peak in the afternoon.
Do you prefer phone calls or Zoom/video?
Austin: Phone calls.
Alex: Again, neither. I prefer face-to-face interactions.
Is your office neat and organized or messy/creatively cluttered?
Austin: Neat and creatively cluttered.
Alex: Messy and creatively cluttered.
Are you a social butterfly or do you prefer the comforts of home?
Austin: Definitely a balance of both.
Alex: I am an introverted extrovert, so I do love to socialize, but in small doses with a heavy dose of home comforts for balance.
My favorite period in design is…
Austin: Art Deco.
Alex: Honestly, now, because it allows me to access inspiration from all previous eras and that leads to truly layered design.
I am creatively inspired by…
Austin: Nature and traveling, details from the world around me.
Alex: Innovation. I love taking inspiration from something seemingly unrelated to the end design. I am especially drawn to organic elements of design and nature.
The best part of working together is…
Austin: Being able to bounce ideas off of each other without judgment, having the power of two minds behind a unified vision and goal.
Alex: Getting to be creative with someone who is equally as passionate about what I am doing as I am: the extra benefit is that person is my best friend and husband!
