King Living: Global Expansion Brings The Australian Firm’s Relaxed Aesthetic To The U.S.

Since 1977, King Living has been at the forefront of Australian furniture design, and now this innovative firm has unveiled their first two U.S. showrooms in Chicago and Orange County, California. These new locations feature the company’s award-winning furniture, including sofas, luxurious dining room pieces, contemporary bedroom furnishings and outdoor collections. Known for their attention to quality, design and comfort, the family-owned Australian business is headed by founder David King, who explains why he is proud of his company’s past and excited about its future.

Congratulations on opening your first two showrooms in the United States. How did you decide to make California (pictured above) and Chicago your initial locations?
David King: California felt like the perfect place to start. The relaxed Orange County coastal lifestyle really mirrors the Australian way of living, and that connection comes through in our designs. People in California are discerning — they value sustainability and are drawn to expertly crafted furniture that combines timeless design with affordability. We’re proud to offer a collection that’s versatile and customizable, which fits seamlessly with the needs of West Coast interior designers, architects and homeowners who appreciate both quality and style. For our second showroom, Chicago was a natural choice. It’s one of the world’s greatest design destinations, and for a company like ours which places design and innovation at the forefront, it’s exciting to be part of such a vibrant community.

Why is now the right time to grow your company?
DK: We have ambitious plans for global growth, and the United States is a big part of that vision. I’m excited to share that our third U.S. showroom will open in Portland, Oregon in 2025. With that, we’ll have six showrooms across North America, following the launch of our Toronto Showroom early next year. We’re just getting started — there’s much more to come in 2025.

What sets King Living apart from other furniture companies?
DK: We are known for pushing the boundaries of what furniture can achieve. We’re not content to just create ordinary furniture; we’re focused on designing furniture that truly enhances the way people live. Every sofa we make is built on a steel frame, which provides a strong foundation for our modular designs. That modularity allows arms, backs and shelves to be rearranged into endless configurations, adapting to changing spaces and lifestyles.

Is sustainability an important aspect of your business plan?
DK: Sustainability has been at the heart of what we do since the beginning. Our durable materials and removable covers are designed to extend the life of each piece, and as a vertically integrated business, we control every aspect of design and manufacturing. This means we can maintain strict quality standards, innovate quickly, and ensure our furniture stands the test of time — rather than ending up in a landfill. It’s a philosophy that started back in the 1970s when my mother, Gwen King, and I began making simple foam chairs in our family home in Sydney. Even then, sustainability was a guiding principle. Today, that same ethos drives us, and it’s helped King Living grow to over 30 showrooms across Australia, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore.

What are some of the aspects of King Living’s authentic Australian design that will appeal to U.S. residents?
DK: The U.S. market has really embraced what King Living offers: practical, livable furniture that blends timeless aesthetics with exceptional comfort and customization. Customers here relate to the relaxed Australian aesthetic and love the level of personalization we provide. The ability to customize every detail of a sofa, from seat configurations to fabrics, finishes and even Smart accessories, has been particularly well received. Our mission to create lasting furniture is also appreciated. People value the craftsmanship that goes into every piece, from our durable steel frames with the assurance of a 25-year warranty. We have customers in Australia who come to us to recover their sofas from the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Globally, our designs are celebrated for their timeless appeal. We focus on clean, enduring aesthetics that stay relevant as trends come and go. Our award-winning Jasper Sofa has been our best-selling design for over 20 years. It’s this balance of style and adaptability that continues to be valued across the globe.

What are some of your company’s upcoming plans?
DK: As we look to the future, we remain deeply connected to our origins and values. We are building for the future with a vision to be a 100-year brand, setting benchmarks for quality, sustainability and innovation. King Living truly is the future of furniture. Every decision we make, from opening new showrooms to investing in our people, is guided by that vision. Through thoughtful planning, a customer-first philosophy and a dedication to excellence, King Living is poised to become a brand that lasts a century and beyond.
