Though running a successful business can be an undeniable challenge, Original BTC is proof that doing so with family can provide a glimmer of light. The British-based lighting company was founded by Peter Bowles in 1990 and his three children — Charlie, Hettie, and Gina — carry the brand’s proverbial torch. Here, Charlie offers a glimpse behind the 34-year-old business.

When was the company founded and by whom?
Charlie Bowles: Founded in 1990 by my dad, Peter Bowles.
Tell us about the current family involvement.
CB: I’m the current director, my sister Hettie is the operations and logistics director, and my other sister Gina is the director of Beadlight.

Lunch breaks together or separately:
CB: Together. We take turns buying each other lunch.

Why is this the business your family is in?
CB: My dad started in cutlery and had a cutlery factory in Sheffield, then progressed to other pieces for the home. He ended up with lighting, which he has now been doing for 34 years. His father also worked in lighting but sold his company when my dad was younger.
What is the best part of being involved in your family’s business?
CB: Being able to see and speak with my family on a daily basis and knowing we can rely on each other.

Vacations together or separately:
CB: Generally separate, although we do overlap sometimes as we have a family holiday home that we all visit.

Cherished family business milestone:
CB: Winning a Queen’s Award in 2015 was a big deal for us—such recognition for the hard work and effort put in by everyone involved in the business. And while this is a family-run business, we do see the whole team as part of a wider family.
Ten years from now, I hope our family business will …
CB: Continue to be going strong. We always want to be building on what we have, improving wherever possible, and continuing to launch products people desire.
