Designed entirely around protected live oak, interior designer Shannon Eddings captured the spirit of nature in a new home where this majestic tree provided an endless source of inspiration.
Project Details:
Location: Historic Travis Heights neighborhood of Austin, Texas
Interior Designer: Shannon Eddings Interiors
Unusual inspo: The owners lovingly call an upstairs area “the hot dog room” due to its muted red and mustard color scheme; it’s a popular spot for hosting soccer watch parties.
Biggest surprise: The homeowners requested either green or wood elements in the kitchen, and Eddings combined both (in what was initially a hard sell) resulting in one of their favorite rooms.
From the interior designer:
“The owner is a native Austinite; he bought this home in the charming Travis Heights neighborhood and sat on it for five years before deciding to make it a home with his girlfriend. They wanted to design an adult home, with the idea that it could comfortably transition to a family home with children one day. They originally wanted to renovate it, but due to a beautiful live oak tree in the backyard — Austin is very protective of their trees — they ultimately made the decision to start fresh to save the tree and maximize space. From there, we embraced the tree and incorporated it into the design to create a modern tree house.”
“Additionally, we sourced primarily vintage and antique pieces to furnish the home. Every single room has some piece that is old and reclaimed. The sconces in the living room are midcentury from France and were purchased on 1stDibs. The entryway piece and its lamp are both antique. The primary bedroom nightstands were a Chairish purchase from the midcentury as well. Upstairs in the media room we sourced antique chairs and reimagined them in a Kufri fabric to pair with antique side tables and a Danish midcentury coffee table purchased from the Round Top antique show. Paired with a Design Within Reach performance sofa, it’s a wonderful mix of new and old. The desk in the guest bedroom was our client’s childhood desk so we made sure to use it in a charming spot right under the oval window.”
