Room To Grow In A Family-Friendly Home

How do you craft a home that appeals to both parents and children? This challenge was skillfully met by interior designer Emily Del Bello, who worked her magic when creating spaces for a busy young family in suburban Rye, New York. Del Bello’s intention was to make comfortable, engaging rooms that would endure through the years. Thanks to her meticulous approach, every part of the home is user-friendly and toddler-approved.

City-to-suburbs transition | Coming from the city to Westchester County, this young couple wanted their first home to feel fresh and reflect their tastes while still feeling timeless. With the owner’s background in a stylish industry, Del Bello incorporated elevated, design-forward elements while keeping things grounded and livable. The goal was to fashion a home that felt personal and inviting without leaning too hard into passing trends.

Spatial requirements | The family currently has one daughter, and as they continue to grow, forming a space that evolves with their needs was key. Using durable, timeless pieces that stand the test of time (and toddler life!), the home now reflects their stage in life: fresh, functional, and full of potential.

Classic choices | Del Bello chose wool rugs throughout since their softness and durability were perfect for busy family life. Another standout feature was the limewashed walls in the dining room, hand-painted by Heather Kozak and layered with a rich mix of paint colors that truly command attention; it’s rich and inviting with just the right amount of edge to spark conversation while still feeling cozy. These choices balance beauty and practicality… and will age gracefully.

Multi-generational appeal | The cohesive design approach was carried seamlessly throughout the layout by using a consistent color palette. At the same time, it was important to incorporate personality, reflecting the energy of a young family. Del Bello’s focus was on designing a livable environment that could withstand everyday life without worrying about damage or stains. Every element was chosen with usability in mind, ensuring the home feels both welcoming and practical. With room for future growth in mind, she also introduced spaces that could adapt and evolve over time.

From the Designer | The main objective of this project was to create a sturdy yet sophisticated home that our clients could grow into. The homeowners were easygoing and truly trusted our vision from the beginning. They especially love the dining room and the main bedroom. In the bedroom, we designed a custom bed with a whimsical wave detail to add just the right touch of playfulness. It’s personal, cozy, and totally unique. With its captivating blue limewash walls and textured chairs adding an unexpected layer of interest, the dining room feels elevated and memorable. We designed a home that feels stylish and intentional, while still being completely livable. Every space was thoughtfully planned to grow with their family: layered with warmth, personality, and room to evolve.
