Andrew Joseph: What inspired you to become a designer?
Diana Wagenbach: For me, home is everything — it’s where your life unfolds, your memories are made, and your energy is restored. I’ve always believed that real design matters because it goes far beyond choosing pretty things. It’s about creating a thoughtful flow that supports the way you live, functions beautifully day to day, and is layered with details that make it inspiring to be in. I became a designer to help people experience that transformation — where every space works hard for them and looks timelessly beautiful doing it.
AJ: Can you describe your design philosophy in three words?
DW: Timeless. Tailored. Thoughtful.
AJ: How do you approach a new design project?
DW: It starts with listening — really listening — to my clients. Every home tells a story, and my job is to uncover it. From there, I study the architecture and create a framework that gets the flow right first — making sure the space works beautifully for the way they live every day. Once that foundation is set, I layer in materials, textures, and bespoke details that bring the personality and beauty. For me, true luxury is when a home feels effortless to live in and inspiring to look at.

AJ: Can you describe a project that you’re particularly proud of?
DW: Opening our new studio in downtown Hinsdale has been a career milestone. The space is in a historic building, and I wanted it to reflect everything Studio W Interiors stands for — timeless design, architectural detail, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. We preserved the building’s character while layering in refined materials, custom furnishings, and thoughtful lighting that make it both a beautiful workspace and a welcoming environment for clients. It’s more than just an office — it’s a living example of our design philosophy, and a space that inspires us every day.
AJ: How do you balance functionality and aesthetics in your designs?
DW: I believe functionality is the starting point of great design. If a space doesn’t flow well or support your daily life, it will never feel truly beautiful. I map out how each room will be used, how people will move through it, and what it needs to function seamlessly. Then, I build on that with refined materials, layered textures, and architectural details that make it visually compelling. The result is a home where beauty and purpose are so intertwined, you can’t separate one from the other.
AJ: How do you incorporate sustainability into your designs?
DW: For me, sustainability starts with designing for longevity. I favor timeless architecture, classic silhouettes, and high-quality materials that will endure — avoiding the waste that comes with disposable design. I also seek out responsibly sourced woods, natural fibers, and artisan-made pieces whenever possible. Creating something beautiful that will be loved for decades is the most sustainable choice we can make.

AJ: What is your favorite aspect of your job?
DW: Watching a project come to life — from the first sketches to the final installation — is incredibly rewarding. But what I love most is seeing the way a finished home changes how my clients live. When they walk into their space and it feels effortless, functional, and truly beautiful, that’s when I know we’ve created something lasting. It’s about more than design; it’s about transforming the way they experience home every single day.
AJ: What would your dream project or dream client be right now?
DW: A historic property with great bones, paired with a client who values the process as much as the outcome. I love weaving the character of an old home with fresh ideas, creating something that feels both rooted and current. The dream is a client who’s excited to collaborate, trusts the vision, and wants to create a home that’s not just beautiful today, but even more beautiful twenty years from now.
