Urban Retreat Collection From S. Harris: An Escape From The Everyday

Known for over 100 years of expertise as a boutique textile house, S. Harris’s new Urban Retreat Collection is a celebration of fabric in natural tones and subtle textures designed to soothe the soul. Divided into four related categories — Dewy Neutrals, Terra, Sagebrush and Moon — the colorways are refreshing and inviting. Coordinating wallcoverings and furniture fringe lay the sensorial groundwork for a home teeming with curated style. Jodi Finer, creative director of S. Harris, reveals the genesis of this unique collection.

Gwen Donovan: What inspired the look and feel of the Urban Retreat Collection?
Jodi Finer: The words that immediately come to mind are contemporary, organic, reconnecting and remembering what matters. When combined, these words are at the very heart of meaningful living. To develop a modern and elevated color scheme, we leaned heavily into monochromatic and moody tones. Using soft, natural materials, we’ve created a backdrop of quiet luxury, making your home a place to reset and recharge.

GD: How would you describe the four different fabric categories?
JF: Dewy Neutrals are youthful and fresh, using soft creams, warm rice tones and crisp white hues. This color scheme invokes the first quiet moments of morning: fresh, soft and full of possibility. Terra combines lively corals with deep ochre and sun-warmed sandstone. Bronzed and painted, it brings the untamed beauty of nature indoors. Sagebrush delivers a range of verdant greens and seafoam aquas to surprise and delight. Nature’s grounding energy finds a home in its muted earth tones and lush greens. Moon is an impactful combination of black and white with infusions of color. It reflects the timeless power of the lunar cycle, whether it’s the silhouette of a distant star against a pale sky or the patterns of a weathered rock bathed in shadow and light.

GD: Which textures and patterns are your favorites in each category?
JF: There are so many to choose from! In the Dewy Neutrals category, I’d say Pasture Raised, a contemporary lattice design on linen that evokes the reassuring order of nature; Street Wave, cut velvet featuring a distinctive ripple wave texture; and Birdseye, another plush velvet fabric which was reimagined with subtle, touchable shagreen. One of my favorites in Terra is Parallel Field, a striking design with a cording effect. The flowing lines create a dynamic play of texture and form. Sagebrush’s Grove Path pattern is special. It features syncopated embroidery on 100% linen, integrating shapes that conjure an expanse of seaside. Finally, Moon presents an artisanal spray-dyed patchwork on velvet, each yard a unique work in colorways echoing the banded hues of the sky at dawn and dusk.

GD: What are some of the feelings that this collection evokes?
JF: We really thought about this aspect when developing the Urban Retreat aesthetic, and some of the descriptives we came back to time and again included calm, reflective, balanced, simple and restrained.

GD: How does the calming spirit of the Urban Retreat line make a home a haven?
JF: This line is all about creating a space for recharging, being fully yourself, creativity and connection. Our daily rituals bring forth good energy, a place where stillness can settle and help balance a busy life. In this way, the Urban Retreat Collection delivers cozy yet modern designs to enhance everyday living.
