A Southern Eye on the Future: A Conversation with designer Lindsey Coral Harper

2-FAMILY-ROOM-LEFTASPIRE Metro sat down with Lindsey Coral Harper, a New York Designer with a southern background and sophistication. She is currently one of the designers contributing to the much-buzzed-about Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse and has shown her prowess as a young designer with an ever-expanding array of clients around the world. Here is some insight into Ms. Harper’s world, her thoughts on trends, holiday traditions, design tips and her firm’s success.

You’re a Georgia native, but now live in New York. How has your southern heritage inspired your design aesthetic?
I think my aesthetic is comfortable yet sophisticated and very layered, which is a direct influence from growing up in the South where people entertain often in their houses and aren’t afraid to really live in them!

On this same note, have these southern elements in your design and personal style been well received here in the north? Do the genteel components of your work translate well?
I assume so, I am fortunate to work with clients all over the country. At the end of the day, I want clients to enjoy being at home, in the space I’ve created for them and with them.

• How have your travels around the world, both during your education and today as a designer with international clients impacted your design approach?
Travel is such an eye opening experience. I love to travel and see how other people live and to see the colors, patterns, and textures of different parts of the world.

• What are some of your favorite areas to work in (besides New York of course)? What about these cultures do you love?
I’ll pretty much work anywhere. I do a lot of work down South and Florida, but I have also done a lot of work in California, Colorado, Vermont, as well as the tri-state area. I’ve also worked out of the country in Montreal and London. Each place has provided a wonderful and unique experience. I like working with and meeting new vendors, creatives and artisans.

• Tell us about your work designing a room in the Atlanta Homes and Lifestyle Home for the Holidays Designer House?
I designed the family room which is a large room, so I wanted to make sure I kept it warm and cozy and created a space that a family would actually enjoy spending quality time in, without it being too pretentious.

• As the holidays approach, what are a couple design tips you could offer when decorating for the season? Any personal rules of thumb?
Decorating should be fun and not stressful, so I say do what you like! Greenery is easy because it looks great and smells great! I pick up ornaments when I travel and have been doing so for years, I also have a collection of silver ornaments so it’s a nice combination.

• What is one of your favorite holiday traditions? Family tradition or otherwise.
I always stop by Bemelmans bar at the Carlyle in New York to get into the Holiday spirit!

• What is one of your favorite memories from your work or personal experiences from this past year? Any lessons learned? Inspiration? Something that will guide you?
This has been a wonderful year, I have moved into a new and much larger office. I have beefed up my staff and we have worked on some great fun projects across the country. All in all it has been very busy and very productive and a lot of fun!

• You’ve built your business from the ground up and have developed an impressive array of work and clientele. Is there any advice you can offer for young designers starting out?
Work hard and stay true to your design aesthetic. Work/learn from someone whose work you admire. Listen to your clients and push yourself. I think my best work comes when I’m almost a little nervous about something that I am creating, when I am pushing the envelope. Don’t get discouraged, success doesn’t happen overnight.
