Inspired by the tranquil beauty of the forest and the diverse landscapes surrounding it, the Sylvan collection from Kelly Ventura and Sunbrella celebrates the patterns that emerge from the natural world.
This week, Kelly Ventura joins us to discuss the collaboration.

Raymond Paul Schneider: When did you first start developing this new collection?
Kelly Ventura: Performance fabric has been on our radar for a while, but we officially began developing the Sunbrella collection in early 2024.
From our first conversations to the final launch, the process took about a year. There’s a lot that goes into developing a new product — from early brainstorming and initial meetings to manufacturing, mock-ups, color studies, strike-offs, final product development, upholstery projects, a full photoshoot and launching the collection online. It’s been such a rewarding process, and we’ve been incredibly fortunate to partner with the talented team at Sunbrella.
RPS: What was your initial inspiration, and where did the idea(s) come from? Describe your overall creative and design process.
KV: We’ve been thinking about performance fabric for years, so we’re thrilled to finally bring this collection to life. Our goal was to create a line that’s beautiful and functional — perfect for both indoor and outdoor living. We started with a mood board filled with inspiration imagery, color palettes and weaving samples from Sunbrella. From there, we developed patterns that reflect our brand’s signature aesthetic — from bold florals and modern geometrics to delicate botanicals. It’s a versatile mix that brings comfort and character to everyday spaces.

RPS: Did you have a specific audience or theme in mind?
KV: We designed this collection with everyday living in mind — families, design lovers and anyone who wants durability without sacrificing beauty. The aim was to create pieces that feel elevated yet approachable, with a nod to our nature-inspired roots.
RPS: What methods, tools, and materials did you use to develop and prototype this design?
KV: Our design process started traditionally — with hand-painted artwork, sketches and pattern concepts. Once the initial designs were complete, we collaborated closely with the Sunbrella team to fine-tune the woven elements, reviewing strike-offs and samples throughout development.

RPS: Did you use any new techniques or technologies to conceptualize or create this product?
KV: Yes! Once our artwork was finalized, Sunbrella created digital simulations to show how the designs would translate when woven. That visualization tool was incredibly helpful as we worked through adjustments in color, texture and layout. We spent several months in back-and-forth revisions to ensure every detail felt just right.
RPS: Were there any challenges that influenced or changed the final design?
KV: One of the bigger challenges was converting our watercolor artwork into woven fabric, especially with color limitations. But thanks to the expertise of the Sunbrella team, we were able to problem-solve and achieve exactly what we had envisioned.

RPS: Describe your brand’s overall DNA and ethos.
KV: Our work brings expressive watercolor designs to life across textiles, wallpaper and home accessories. Known for our signature florals and vibrant patterns, we focus on creating designs that feel joyful, spontaneous and rooted in nature.
Our painterly approach embraces movement and color, from hand-painted botanicals to abstract motifs. In addition to our core collection, we collaborate with leading retailers to offer beautifully crafted products.
