A Contemporary Apartment Maximizes Views Of France’s Basque Coast

With La Rhune mountain to one side and the entirety of the Saint-Jean-de-Luz bay on the other, Atelier Delphine Carrère’s primary goal in renovating this apartment in Biarritz, France was optimizing the views. The end result included using the attic level to create three comfortable suites that look out on the scenery for miles.

“[It’s] an extremely unique location that we call the peninsula of Saint-Jean-de-Luz due to it being surrounded by the working fishing port and La Rhune proudly overlooking the town on one side, and the entire bay and the beach at the foot of the property,” shares Carrère.

Biarritz, an elegant seaside town on southwestern France’s Basque coast, is a popular vacation spot and surfing destination, with long sandy beaches. The scenic locale is mirrored inside the apartment, with a color palette of light woods, white and occasional splashes of pale blue. In the kitchen, a large industrial cabinet in a dusty seafoam swatch plays with custom wood cabinetry and expansive swathes of marble on both the island and backsplash.

In furnishing the 1,800 square feet of space, Carrère took a contemporary chic approach, using classic high-end materials including Herringbone flooring and marble, all the while mixing more modern colorful inspirations. In the minimally decorated living space, a structural fireplace and coffered ceiling add visual interest. Viabizzuno lighting can be seen throughout.

The finished product is a quiet, comfortable space that exists in harmony with its idyllic location.
