DESIGN: Jen Sauer, The Sauer Group PHOTO: Greg Cox PROJECT LOCATION: Karoo, South Africa PROJECT DETAILS: In this en suite bathroom, a blue-and-white Delft-style wallpaper by Cara Saven is the defining feature. The rich pattern isn’t just a visual choice — it ties the room to Karoo heritage, referencing the ceramics that once lined kitchens and cupboards in homes like this one throughout the region. Jen Sauer’s design lends the space a sense of history and formality while still feeling graphic and fresh. SOURCES: Wallpaper: Cara Saven Wall Design; Chandelier: Mud Studio. THIS OR THAT: Natural or manufactured bathroom materials? Natural with a twist. Something unexpected. Go big or go home.

DESIGN: Yuri Sagatov, ODE Design PHOTO: Jennifer Hughes PROJECT LOCATION: Arlington, Virginia PROJECT DETAILS: Having previously lived in the city, the owners were drawn to this 2025 build’s spacious, loft-like interiors that still allow for spatial definition. Calm and symmetrical, with a vaulted ceiling and a focal point in the sculptural black tub set beneath a skylight, the primary bath is restrained and cohesive, with a palette of oak, limestone and marble used throughout. This neutrality is punctuated by moments of contrast where the tone shifts dramatically to balance the aesthetic. SOURCES: Honed champagne limestone from Marble Systems for floor, wet area wall, and tub accent wall; Badeloft freestanding black tub; Graff matte black plumbing fixtures, towel and robe hardware, and Lacava sink from W.T Weaver & Sons in Georgetown; Gramaco Calacatta polished marble slabs. THIS OR THAT: Backlit vanity mirror or traditional wall sconces? A well-chosen wall sconce provides task lighting and architectural detail. It creates soft, even light across the face, and beyond function, it adds to the design story. There are endless possibilities in terms of material, finish and form, making it easy to tailor to the overall aesthetic and character of your home.
