“The showiest window boxes in town may be the work of Serhiy Mshanetskiy”, says the Wall Street Journal about the owner of Brooklyn Heights Gardens. Serhiy was a doctor in Ukraine until emigrating to America 20 years ago. Here, he worked as a home-health attendant while waiting for his green card. Meanwhile, puttering in his employer’s Brooklyn Heights backyard, the young doctor learned the rudiments of gardening in a merciless microclimate with its alternating hot spells, cold snaps, deluges and droughts. With that education under his belt and after several assignments from neighboring houses up and down the street familiar with his work, Serhiy opened his own urban gardening business: Brooklyn Heights Gardens. It provides seasonally renewed window boxes, garden design concepts and installation and thoroughly dependable maintenance. Starting with just two clients, the company has grown steadily and today, BHG serves over 125 garden-loving clients, all but a handful in the Heights. Not surprisingly Serhiy lives here, too. His love and knowledge of the historic district result in work that is appropriate to the houses it enhances and to the history it reflects.
