Casa Paros Celebrates The Essence Of The Mediterranean And The Soul Of Baja California Sur

Casa Paros emerges from an intimate, emotional reflection. For its owners — a pair of travelers with deep ties to both the Mediterranean coast and the Baja California landscape — this home needed to be more than a place to live: it had to embody their memories, lifestyle and genuine appreciation for craftsmanship. Inspired by the Greek island of Paros and its serene, white-painted architecture, the design team at MERCANTIL by Hillary Kent chose to reinterpret that sense of tranquility through a local lens, honoring the character of the Mexican landscape. As a result, the project was articulated around calm, materiality, and a sense of belonging — every decision resonating with the place and its people.

Although the architecture was already well-developed, the interior design profoundly transformed the atmosphere of the space. The original structure — with high ceilings, thermal walls, strategic openings, black metal windows, lime-washed surfaces and a palapa-covered terrace — provided a fertile starting point. The design team proposed a spatial language defined by soft transitions, intuitive circulation and a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living. Bedrooms open onto the garden, patios filter light like natural screens, and spaces are conceived to be lived in without rigid programming — a narrative where sensory experience precedes function.

Each piece of furniture and every decorative object was custom-designed by MERCANTIL, avoiding prefabricated solutions. Teak wood was sourced from family-run workshops in Miraflores; handwoven lamps came from La Paz; and embroidered textiles arrived from Cerritos. Warm-toned polished concrete ties all the rooms together with a unifying surface. The careful material selection achieves an understated aesthetic: untreated woods, natural cottons and linens, volcanic stone, local ceramics and plant-based fibers coexist in harmony, shaping a sober, tactile, and authentic atmosphere.

Certain gestures — subtle yet meaningful — define the soul of the project. The planting of a mature olive tree in the front courtyard — a direct nod to the Mediterranean — adds not only symbolic identity but also a living presence that anchors the entrance and gives structure to the space. Far from ornamental, these decisions weave a narrative that can be felt even before crossing the threshold. The house unfolds as an organic, introspective place, designed to be experienced in intimacy and stillness, where every texture and shadow tells a quiet story.

The layout responds to real-life needs, far removed from stylistic trends. Two bedrooms in the main house, a detached guest house casita, and outdoor areas connected by stone paths coexist with a fully equipped woodworking studio integrated into the garage, allowing the owners to pursue their craft practices. The rooftop, designed as an intimate lookout point, includes a central fire pit and sweeping views of the Pacific. The lap pool is oriented to capture the best daylight, and its surroundings feature native species that preserve the local ecosystem. Each space reflects a balance between contemplation and functionality, between the everyday and the symbolic.

For MERCANTIL by Hillary Kent, this project marks the consolidation of a design philosophy grounded in dialogue, respect for place, and material excellence. Every creation is a layering of story, technique, emotion, silence and climate. Here, those dimensions are woven together with subtlety and depth — not to impress, but to accompany. As Kent notes, the goal is not for a guest to say, “What a beautifully designed house,” but rather to feel, “I want to stay here.” That desire — to remain, to dwell with the body, the breath, and the quiet — is the purest manifestation of what this design seeks: a sense of belonging.
