This Beachside Haven Is A Study In Serenity

Amidst the gentle rhythm of the ocean, where the horizon stretches endlessly, lies a beachside retreat that defies conventional expectations. Designed by Daniel Joseph Chenin, FAIA, this home is a masterclass in restraint, balance and the art of refined living. Seamlessly fusing the relaxed atmosphere of a coastal sanctuary with the quiet rigor of meticulous craftsmanship, the residence embodies a unique synthesis of casual elegance and elevated precision.

What began as a loosely defined beach house interior remodel evolved into something far more intentional. The owner, a seasoned traveler with a deep appreciation for timeless design, sought a retreat that was tranquil, yet deeply curated, an environment where every detail has its place and nothing is left to excess.

“He wasn’t looking for an ornate or overly stylized space,” Chenin explains. “It was about distilling the essence of simplicity, order and material authenticity, an understated luxury that isn’t overt, but felt.”

Natural materials, meticulous craftsmanship and a thoughtfully considered spatial flow create a sense of effortless harmony. The structure is not merely a backdrop for beachside living, but a fully immersive experience. Every element, from the positioning of a window to the curvature of a vanity, forms part of a larger symphony of form and function.

Sited on a coveted stretch of coastline, this residence was originally a 1950s structure, and one that, due to California Coastal Commission regulations, could not be entirely rebuilt. Instead, the contractor (Hill Construction) meticulously deconstructed it down to its essential framework, while Chenin reimaged the interior while honoring the existing footprint.

“The biggest challenge was working within a defined box, while still making it feel expansive,” says Chenin.

Maximizing natural light was key. Morning sun spills through a secluded courtyard, bathing the living spaces in golden radiance. As the day progresses, light shifts across wood, onyx, and lacquered surfaces, revealing nuanced textures and imbuing each space with an ever-changing warmth. A circular port window in the living room frames a pristine view of the peninsula, subtly nodding to the home’s nautical connections.

Beyond spatial considerations, the home’s material palette is a study in depth and tactility. Warm oak millwork provides continuity, punctuated by stone and metal accents.

“In a home like this, anything the hand touches should feel exquisite,” Chenin notes.

The kitchen’s sculptural island, in solid carved onyx, mirrors the ocean’s rhythmic ebb and flow, transforming a utilitarian surface into an artful statement. A ship’s rudder-inspired light fixture above it underscores this sense of direction and balance. In the powder room, a steel porthole mirror reflects a mesmerizing school of fish, evoking the feeling of gazing through a yacht’s window into an underwater world, another nod to the home’s immersive connection to the sea.

With limited wall space for conventional art, architectural features become sculptural elements. The living area’s subtly pitched oak-paneled ceiling recalls the hull of a ship. In the kitchen, a sweeping radius ceiling echoes La Jolla’s crashing waves, reinforcing the seamless blend of structure and surroundings.

Throughout, furnishings emphasize craftsmanship: custom-designed vanities blending wood, leather, and metal, and carefully sourced pieces that celebrate balance and restraint. Each selection resonates with the owner’s past experiences, reinterpreted for a new chapter by the sea.

“In a home like this, anything the hand touches should feel exquisite,” Chenin notes.

Public and private realms are distinctly defined: the central courtyard serves as both a transitional space and communal hub, with intimate bedrooms nestled on the periphery. This ensures both openness and seclusion, a delicate balance that captures the essence of coastal living.

For Chenin, the most rewarding aspect was the trust bestowed by the owner. “Our best clients come with a sense of direction, but trust us to shape it into something beyond their initial vision,” he reflects.

The result is a home both personal and universal, where precision meets poetry and craftsmanship meets comfort. Bathed in ever-changing seaside light, this is a sanctuary by the shore, crafted for a life well-lived.
