Retired from soccer since 2015, Soumare’s passion for design has been driving his next chapter. He founded Pitch Concepts in 2012, initially focusing on high-end outdoor spaces such as rooftop decks and backyard terraces. The firm has since grown into Pitch Studio, expanding its offerings to include interior spaces and the full-scale renovation of historic buildings into modern residences. Both branches of the business are based out of Soumare’s Bucktown headquarters, a three-story building he purchased in 2019 and transformed over two years. Soumare resides in the top two floors, which feature ample outdoor space furnished with high-end pieces from the brands the firm represents. See some of Soumare’s work in today’s Designer Friday.

Andrew Joseph: Can you describe a project that you’re particularly proud of?
Bakary Soumare: My retail floor studio and showroom is an immersive experience, with each floor designed to reflect my aesthetic sensibilities. It’s a place where we represent global brands, and clients get a true sense of our work. I’m incredibly proud of how it’s grown and the atmosphere we’ve created — not just for our team but for the entire experience we offer to clients. It’s exceeded everything I initially envisioned, and we’re even expanding the space to keep up with the demand.
AJ: How do you incorporate sustainability into your designs?
Sustainability has naturally become a core element of my projects, not just as a trend but as an extension of my aesthetic. I don’t often build from the ground up; instead, I prefer to work with existing structures, particularly those with historic charm, like Chicago’s iconic Common Bricks. I love the character that comes with using reclaimed materials — repurposing old bricks from demolished buildings is one of my favorite elements to incorporate. Beyond that, I work with several companies that are pioneers in sustainability, and two brands will be 90% of the display in our new showroom space we are expanding into next door. One of my main partners from Italy focuses on using real, sustainably sourced wood, which adds both beauty and eco-consciousness to our designs. Another is a cork company from Portugal, and we use their organic cork for decorative panels and insulation. These products not only look fantastic but are also highly sustainable. These two brands are going to be 90% of the display in our new showroom space we are expanding to next door. Incorporating these elements into my designs wasn’t something I intentionally sought out at first, but I found myself naturally drawn to them. Now, I’m proud to say that sustainability is integral to the way I create, and we’re even expanding our showroom to bring in more of these eco-friendly pieces.

AJ: What is your favorite aspect of your job?
BS: The people I work with, the ones I’ve built this business alongside, are truly the most rewarding part. Some of them have been with me for over a decade, growing both personally and professionally, and knowing I’ve been able to impact their lives in such a meaningful way is incredibly fulfilling. It’s not just about the business — it’s about the lives we’ve been able to create and the shared success that keeps me motivated.
Watching them develop from young professionals into integral parts of the company and seeing the passion and pride they bring to their work every day, is priceless. I make it a priority to ensure my team is happy, fulfilled, and proud of the company we’ve built together.
AJ: What is one of the most interesting projects you’ve recently worked on?
BS: One of the most interesting and challenging projects I’ve worked on recently was a build-out for a client who purchased the most expensive condo in Nashville, Tennessee. My task was to oversee the entire project, from its inception to completion. The challenge arose midway through the project when my client decided she was no longer moving into the space. At that point, the design and furnishings were specifically tailored to her taste — her selections were incredible, but it posed a new challenge for me since 80% of the furnishings had already been purchased, and we were halfway through the build-out. I had to rethink the strategy: how could I maintain the high level of quality and design while scaling back to ensure the condo would appeal to a broader market once it went up for sale? It was all about balancing the need to preserve the integrity of the space with the need to make it market-ready. Additionally, I had to carefully consider which furnishings and elements could be repurposed for her next space in the city. Despite the challenges, the project was completed ahead of schedule, and the condo went on to sell as the most expensive property in Nashville at the time. It was a rewarding experience that pushed me to be resourceful and creative, proving that even in the most unpredictable situations, a great outcome is always possible.

AJ: What is your favorite thing about being a designer?
BS: I love everything about design/architecture, from the learning process to the endless creativity it offers. But what’s truly priceless to me is the transformation. Taking something from an existing space or idea and completely reimagining it into something new is an incredible feeling. The ability to breathe new life into a space and watch it evolve into something beautiful is amazing. That’s what keeps me inspired — constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and creating spaces that leave a lasting impact. I played professional sports for years, but it was just my job. Design, on the other hand, is my passion. That’s the main difference — it doesn’t just feel like work; it’s something I love. Every project I take on excites me, and the process of transforming spaces keeps me motivated. It’s not about just getting the job done; it’s about creating something meaningful and new every time. That’s what makes being a designer so fulfilling for me.
AJ: How would you describe your favorite interior design aesthetic?
BS: Minimal, timeless, sustainable, and organic. I love the cleanliness and simplicity that comes with a blend of Scandinavian and Japanese influences. A space that feels fresh and relevant today but will still look amazing ten years from now—that’s what I strive for. It’s not just about trends; it’s about creating something lasting. This appreciation for design extends into all facets of my life, including fashion and the true way I cook (which is another passion of mine). Simplicity is key for me, and it’s what I truly love most in both my work and personal style.
