White walls and a gray ceiling help enhance this room’s natural light. The wooden side tables and coffee table introduce natural, rustic elements that add warmth to the space.
Andrew Joseph: You’re the newest Crayola color. What color are you and why?
DM: Dalmatian, because I love black and white. Can we put two colors in one Crayon? Maybe end to end?
AJ: What is the last book you read?
DM: Daisy Jones and The Six. It’s a 70’s era, Topanga Canyon, “Almost Famous” meets “Fleetwood Mac” novel, but written like an interview. It’s fun and easy, and I read it all on one plane ride. I love a good story that reads like a movie.
AJ: If you could live in any home in a movie or television series, what would it be?
DM: I love Meryl Streep’s house in “It’s Complicated,” but really give me any Nancy Meyers movie set. I’d love to look like the whole lifestyle of the set from “A Single Man,” but I’m not that slick. I also think it would be amazing to visit a set based on “The Incredibles.” While a cartoon, every time I watch that movie I’m inspired. A lava wall that opens like curtains?! Awesome. And the house from “Beetlejuice.” It’s actually brilliant.
This sophisticated office features a luxurious desk from Carrocel Interiors and a black coffered ceiling that adds depth and dimension to the space.
AJ: What would you like to be remembered for?
DM: I tell my team, “I want people to like working with us, like working for us, and like the work we do.” I think there’s a mash-up of quality, service, taste, and treating people well in this mantra.
AJ: What’s something you always travel with?
DM: A scarf. I traveled with an amazing woman on my first international business trip, and she told me to always travel with as big a scarf as possible – planes are always cold. She was right. About that, and that calories don’t count in the air.
AJ: What would your dream project or dream client be right now?
DM: I’m pretty lucky that I’m living the dream. Both BHDM and our new company Archive by Dan Mazzarini really feed my creative passion. We try really hard to bring diverse work to the firm. It keeps things interesting for everyone.
I’d LOVE to do master planning for a resort, something that allows us to touch lots of different kinds of programming within a parent narrative. From big gestures to all the details, that’s what gets me up in the morning.
This earthy and organic bedroom is enriched with layers of texture. A vintage nightstand, paired with a wicker bed frame keeps to the natural theme, backed by mossy green walls.
AJ: Style (or design) icon?
DM: Gene Kelly for fashion, Phillipe Starck, Thomas O’Brien, and Anouska Hempel for design, and scatter my ashes at March SF.
AJ: Must-have clothing item everyone should have in their closet?
DM: It’s all about classics, and fit: White t-shirts and button-downs, great jeans, Stan Smiths, black cashmere turtleneck, camel coat and a great watch. Mine are Cartier and Hermes.
