Designer Friday: An aspire Exclusive Interview With Jenn Feldman

Jenn Feldman is an interior designer whose design career soared in 2007 when Nate Berkus recognized her talent, leading to her winning Oprah Winfrey’s first design contest and featuring on Oprah’s show and in O at Home Magazine. This success spurred the launch of Jenn Feldman Designs, where her extensive background in art and experience as a beauty and fashion publicist in London and New York enriched her approach to interior design. Now a respected member of the American Society of Interior Designers, Jenn crafts bespoke interiors nationwide, drawing inspiration from travel, art, fashion, and film to weave clients’ stories into each space. Residing in Los Angeles with her family and sheepadoodle Frankie, Jenn’s personal experiences continue to influence her unique and sophisticated design style. Learn more about Jenn Feldman and her designs in today’s Designer Friday.

Andrew Joseph: What inspired you to become a designer?
Jenn Feldman: Realizing this path had everything I loved – creativity, human connection, business acumen and the chance to tell someone’s life story, uniquely and personally. This never felt like a “job” to me – rather an authentic extension of who I am and what I know!

AJ: Can you describe your design philosophy in three words?
JF: Curated, collected and comfortable.

AJ: How do you approach a new design project?
JF: I always take the first opportunity to think about the client, their family constellation and what the property needs. Then I scour by visual road maps and find the images that represent look and feel. Once I can unlock that the rest falls into place easily with process and confidence.

AJ: What is the most challenging project you’ve worked on and how did you overcome it?
JF: How much time do you have!! I think every project has a new challenge that allows us to learn, change and grow. As a true artist, you have to embrace that some challenges, problems and never-before-seen issues will show up on any given project. It’s a mistake to NOT expect that. But with experience and confidence I don’t have to fear it, rather I leave space for it and we are getting an extra win if we glide on through. There is no problem if there is a solution, some are just easier to solve than others!

AJ: Can you tell us about a design trend you are excited about?
JF: Chocolate Brown! They say trends come full circle every 30 years … my parents had a chocolate brown dining room in our house growing up and here we are again! I love when a palette feels fresh again and I’m loving the rich dark brown fabrics that are showing up at the studio.

AJ: What design trends do you think will be popular in the coming years?
JF: I think the trend of prioritizing your home is something we are not going to see change anytime soon. Post-pandemic life has really shown us all that there’s no better place than being comfortable and happy in a well-loved home. Sure, we all want normalcy in our daily lives and have all the choices … but staying home, entertaining at home and feeling the sanctuary & safety of being at home has been prioritized as the real luxury of life and I don’t see that changing anytime soon!

AJ: How do you stay creative and inspired?
JF: Travel, art, music and film have always been my greatest inspirations. And then there’s the trip to the hair salon and seeing the tile in the bathroom, people watching everywhere I go! I am always looking at color and texture within everything I do.
