Julia Miller is the creative director at Yond Interiors, a Minneapolis-based interior design firm that prides itself in crafting creative spaces grounded in functionality. With no formal education in interior design, Miller is self-taught, having first renovated her own home with her husband. After living abroad and designing homes overseas for years, Miller found her happy place in the American Midwest. Yond Interiors shares this appreciation, designing on a foundation of local history and culture. Introducing this week’s Designer Friday, Julia Miller.

Yond Interiors creates practical homes in refined, subtle details, balancing the lighter neutral tones of airy curtains and an eye-catching ceiling lamp with the deeper texture of the rug beneath a dark, minimalistic table.
Andrew Joseph: What would your dream project or dream client be right now?
Julia Miller: We have loved working in the mountains! We have been lucky to have a few projects in mountain towns on the west coast, like Sun Valley, and we would love to create more spaces there. It’s been fun to collaborate on homes that are retreat or recreation-focused in such a beautiful natural setting and it would be a dream to work there more often.

Miller and the team at Yond Interiors remodeled this 1930s Colonial-style house in Minneapolis into a comfortable, contemporary home while honoring the original architecture with textural and palette choices.
Andrew: What’s your favorite cocktail?
Julia: My favorite local cocktail is from a local restaurant ‘The Italian Eatery‘. They have a cocktail called the Angry Calabrian, with Mezcal, Reposado, Chipotle Gomme and Pineapple. It’s perfect for year-round sipping – it’s the perfect mix of smooth, smoky and spicy.
Andrew: What’s your current TV obsession?
Julia: I am not usually a TV person, but I binged all the episodes of ‘Only Murders in the Building‘ in one evening and I am dying for season two. The set design was to die for, highly recommend!

This bedroom combines classic and modern accents, including touch open drawers, light linens, and a handwoven bedside rug, for a delightfully soothing space.
Andrew: Favorite piece of clothing you own?
Julia: I am obsessed with these barrel pants from Everlane. They are great for all of the schlepping that interior designers do but still feel pulled together and polished.

Yond infuses this classic drawing room space with a few contemporary accessories, including a bulbous area lamp and quirky, thinly rimmed armchairs.
Andrew: What are some of the podcasts you listen to and why?
Julia: I mostly listen to podcasts that are educational. I have been hooked on the podcast ‘Ear Hustle‘ for the last few years. It’s an unbelievable show focused on telling the stories of prison life and life post-incarceration.
