After leaving her 12-year-long career in healthcare sales to follow her dreams, Charleston-based designer Megan Molten now owns her own firm and is following her true passion for designing interiors that are meant to be shared. What started off as a hobby of designing friends’ and families’ spaces eventually turned into Megan’s full-time career. As a designer, her work has been described as “clean and coastal” which is apparent in her spaces feeling open and inviting, with a sense of sophisticated whimsy. Find out more about Megan’s work in this week’s Designer Friday.
An abstract face wallpaper shows the personal style of the homeowner, and plays with the hand-drawn geometric style of the bathroom wallpaper. The marble countertop and basin sink complement hexagon tiled floors.
Andrew Joseph: Describe your design style as if you were explaining it to someone who cannot see.
Megan Molten: My design style should make you feel like you are floating, breathing in crisp clean air and hearing the sound of soft waves crashing in the background. My aesthetic has been described as clean, bright, fresh, modern coastal – I love all of those words but in the end it’s about how the space makes you feel.
AJ: If you weren’t a designer, you’d be a ….?
MM: Performer. I love to sing and dance. I was actually a musical theater major in college for a bit when I really thought that’s what I wanted to do with my life because I loved it so much. I then switched to business when I wasn’t ready to move to NY or LA as a sophomore in college – I was having too much fun!
Honing in on the coastal aspect of her style, wicker plays a central role in this kitchen.
AJ: What would you like to be remembered for?
MM: Being kind and a good person. I’m a big believer In what you put out into the world is what you will get back and a little kindness always goes a long way. People won’t remember how you looked or what you are but they will remember if you were nice. I want to be remembered that way.
The moody blue built-in shelves envelope you and provide a peaceful feeling in this living space. The jute rug sitting atop the dark hardwood floors soften the room, while the hand made ceramic art and lamps act as statement pieces. A clear lucite coffee table brings a sense of sophistication to the natural materials
AJ: What’s one thing people don’t know about you?
MM: I grew up competing in pageants from a young age until college – I was actually in the Miss Arkansas pageant (where I’m from) representing my hometown of Hot Springs. This was another opportunity for me to sing and dance which is probably why I enjoyed them so much.
AJ: Secret talent?
MM: I remember all of my cheerleading dances from high school. It’s always a great party trick.
