Andrew Joseph: What inspired you to become a designer?
Michelle Murphy: My exposure to the arts started at an early age, facilitated by my mother’s role as the director of a non-profit art gallery. This had a huge impact on me and started my journey towards becoming an interior designer. The hands-on experiences I had at the gallery, such as helping artists, stuffing envelopes, and attending openings, provided me with a unique perspective on the artistic process. This exposure not only allowed me to develop practical skills but also fostered a deep appreciation for aesthetics, creativity, and the transformative power of visual elements.
Growing up in such a rich artistic environment started my passion for creating visually appealing spaces. The influence of my mother’s involvement in the art world acted as a catalyst, guiding you toward a career in interior design where you could continue to express your creativity and contribute to the creation of aesthetically pleasing environments.
AJ: Can you describe your design philosophy in three words?
MM: Luxe, Layered, Edgy.

AJ: How do you approach a new design project?
MM: When starting a new design project, I start with a deep dive into my client’s wants/needs, their spaces and all their potential. My approach involves layering different design elements to create depth and visual interest. By layering various design elements, such as textures, materials, and colors, I aim to create a visually rich and dynamic atmosphere. The use of textures can add tactile appeal, materials can bring in a sense of quality and durability, and a thoughtfully curated color palette can contribute to the overall mood and style of the space.
AJ: How do you stay creative and inspired?
MM: Everywhere 🙂 Continuous learning, travel, networking, nature, mindful reflection and being curious.

AJ: What is your favorite aspect of your job?
MM: My favorite aspect of the job might be the opportunity to collaborate with clients. Engaging with clients allows me to understand their unique preferences, needs, and visions for the space. I enjoy the challenge of translating their ideas into a cohesive and visually stunning design. Building strong relationships with clients and successfully bringing their visions to life is my jam!
AJ: What is your favorite design element to incorporate into your projects?
MM: My fave design element to incorporate into a project is something unexpected, it could be bold pops of color, textural contrast, statement furniture or art, eclectic mix of styles, unconventional pattern mixes, architectural elements or playing with scale.
