Designer Friday: An Aspire Exclusive Interview With Stephan Jones

Stephan Jones’ eponymous Los Angeles-based company is a full-service interior design firm working on projects across the country. He opened up his West Hollywood storefront studio in March 2020, where he curates a variety of antiques, lighting, casegoods, and furniture. With an artist’s perspective and an interior architect’s steady hand, Jones designs environments that house the heart and soul of his clients. He believes that an interior space should feel like it has always existed, organic and revealing, rather than something that has been “created.” Introducing this week’s Designer Friday, Stephan Jones.

Andrew Joseph: If you could live in any home on any home in a movie or television series, what would it be?
Stephan Jones: Architect Luis Barragan’s home in Mexico City. As a kid, I remember the photos of his home with the floating wood staircase and this window which framed a private courtyard. The honesty of materials, textures and the framing site lines struck me.

AJ: What’s a guilty pleasure you have?
SJ: Super dry, ice-cold vodka martini, olives in a frozen glass.

The apartment was refreshed with new wallpaper in the bedroom and study, refinished floors and a paint job to provide a light background for his exceptional collection of furniture, art and accessories.

AJ: If you weren’t a designer, you’d be…?
SJ: An artist… Art has always been my first true passion, and it is what originally led me to become a designer. I recently joined the Board of Governors at Otis College of Art + Design which allows me to shine a light on the artists in the area through pop-up events at my studio.

AJ: What’s your design pet peeve?
SJ: Contrived interiors, styling and meaningless objects. I am drawn to cultural pieces and antiques.

AJ: What’s something you always travel with?
SJ: A toothbrush + Xanax- I travel often for work as I have many projects in other states and these are two things I always need.

Jones opened up his storefront in March 2020. Sourced from Europe, Mexico, Los Angeles, and Japan, the shop offers a variety of casegoods, lighting, decor, and seating. More recently, he has started hosting artist pop-ups, art exhibitions, and artist talks.

AJ: How would you define your work in three words?
SJ: Genuine, Intentional, Textured.

AJ: Where is the first you want to travel now that everything is opening?
SJ: France and Belgium. I have made so many connections in Europe since beginning my antiquing journey, so reconnecting with the dealers I have been acquiring furnishings for my shop as well as meeting new connections. My projects have kept me traveling throughout the pandemic, but only domestically and on a measured basis.
