Rezi Fradkin founded Arilloom after she was inspired by a deeply personal experience when her mother asked her to use a delicate, 150-180-year-old family heirloom tablecloth for a special occasion. With two young boys at home, Rezi hesitated, fearing it might be damaged. This moment sparked a realization, as some of her fondest childhood memories were of her mother setting the table for family gatherings, which left an indelible mark on her identity.

With over a decade of experience in the fashion industry as a merchandiser and quality consultant, Rezi brought her passion for textiles and design to life through Arilloom. Combining her appreciation for tradition with modern practicality, she sought to create pieces that allow families to enjoy heirlooms without fear, all while preserving the artistry and techniques of women artisans.

Rezi’s vision is to cultivate tradition and artistry, offering products that reflect her commitment to craftsmanship, beauty, and resilience, ensuring that the simple act of gathering around a beautifully set table continues to create cherished memories. Hear more of Rezi’s unique design story in today’s DesignHer feature.

aspire design and home: What inspired you to pursue high-end artisanal crafts specifically?
Rezi Fradkin: My inspiration to pursue high-end artisanal crafts comes from a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and the stories behind handmade items… oh the stories, they have always inspired me.

I have always been drawn to the intricate techniques and cultural heritage involved in creating these unique pieces, which embody both artistry and individuality. The connection between the maker and the material, as well as the sustainability employed in artisanal work, resonates with my values and desire to contribute to a more meaningful and aesthetically enriched world.

adh: Can you share an example of a project where your perspective as a woman played a significant role in the outcome?
RF: My whole mission is to support craft and women. It was very important for me to create a flexible work arrangement tailored to artisans’ needs. Recognizing the challenges that many artisan women face in balancing their lives in multi-generational homes out in remote areas.

adh: How do you balance the traditional aspects of your craft with contemporary trends?
RF: Balancing traditional aspects of looming and embroideries with contemporary trends involves a respectful integration of time-honored techniques with modern innovations. I prioritize understanding the foundational principles that define looming in that region while remaining open to new ideas, materials, and colors. I am always experimenting and collaborating with women artisans. That way, we always find methods to enhance traditional looks, ensuring that our work remains relevant and resonates with our principles without losing its historical essence. Everyday learning and adaptation are key to this balance.

“When you love what you are doing, you are not ambitious, you are not greedy, you are not seeking fame, because that very love of what you are doing is totally sufficient in itself.” – Jiddu Krishnamurti

adh: What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career in high-end artisanal crafts?
RF: It’s fascinating how unexpected encounters can lead to new passions and creative collaborations! What began as a casual meeting has blossomed into a vibrant community of skilled artisans, working together to create intricate cross-stitch embroidery. Despite initial reservations I had about the cross-stitch craft, my desire to explore and my appreciation for their talent has not only enriched my experience but also provided a platform for these artists to shine. This journey highlights the beauty of embracing creativity and the connections that can form through shared artistic endeavors. Our cross-stitch pillows are a true piece of art.

adh: What impact do you hope your work has on those who experience it?
RF: I hope Arilloom’s artisanal linens, handmade in Albania, inspire a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the region, fostering connections between people and the stories behind each piece. By showcasing traditional techniques and local materials, I aim to promote sustainable practices while empowering local artisans and enhancing their livelihoods, ultimately creating a sense of pride and community that resonates with those who experience the work.

adh: How do you navigate the commercial aspects of your craft while maintaining artistic integrity?
RF: Navigating the commercial aspects of handmade craft while maintaining artistic integrity involves a careful balance of prioritizing my creative vision while being mindful of market demands. This means setting clear personal goals that align with my artistic values, selectively collaborating with brands and projects that resonate with my work, and always being transparent with my audience about any commercial partnerships. By staying true to my core principles and continuously evaluating how each opportunity aligns with my artistic mission, I can engage with commercial aspects without compromising the authenticity of Arilloom.
