The Next Big Kitchen Storage Solution? Your Backsplash

Whether you have a pantry full of non-perishables or a china collection, ample storage is a non-negotiable in any kitchen. However, as crucial as it may be, most solutions are constricted to a row of cabinets, a few drawers, and, if you’re lucky, some space in your island. Well, until eggersmann stepped in, that is. The German family-owned brand has been revered as the premier custom cabinetry company since its founding in 1908 and is now looking at an unexpected source to maximize storage space: The kitchen backsplash.

According to Evan Soltoff, vice president of operations at eggersmann USA, the backsplash is the next natural step for an optimal storage solution. “This is considered valuable real estate that is typically in the optimum working areas, therefore clients are opting to use this space, but they still want to keep a clean esthetic,” he says.

The secret behind the balance, Soltoff explains, is the proper proportions. To utilize a backsplash that’s positioned against a wall, install deeper casework. Soltoff typically recommends expanding to a 30-inch-deep cabinet compared to the typical 24 inches.

Backsplash-based storage needs to be practical, and eggersmann delivers with its 15 Square, which can also be used as a room divider, suspended from the ceiling or even sitting on an island. This intuitive system includes several kitchen utensil storage items such as hooks, shelves, power, cookbook stands, spice holders, knife holders, and containers.

“Most people really enjoy the towel holder and knife holder,” Soltoff adds. “These are perfect uses of convenient items that might normally sit on the counter. Now, thanks to the use of the space behind, we can clean up the area and keep them within easy reach.” The flexibility of this setup allows for the homeowner to choose to leave these items exposed or conceal them with a sliding door.

True to the brand’s design ethos, eggersmann offers its backsplash storage solutions in all its other cabinetry materials as well as glass. “You can choose to leave it open for easy access. If you prefer simple shelving, you can also do adjustable or fixed shelving that can serve as spice storage or for whatever you can dream up.” But, as Soltoff points out, its current selection of backsplash storage solutions is only the beginning.

“In quarter one of 2025 we will also be showcasing this backsplash solution with our unique stone in a sliding fashion to truly round out the entire flexibility of material offering,” he says. “It’s a growing and developing solution for eggersmann and we are working on new and creative ways to bring the backsplash into the next generation of kitchen design.”
