Katie Zanzarov of California Closets weighs in.
When it comes to closets, most dwellers envision one of two types of spaces: An underwhelming and often-neglected area to shove clothes and sneakers in on a whim or an unattainable space with over-the-top technology a la movies like Clueless or Overboard. But with the help of California Closets, designing an upscale closet doesn’t have to be a challenging endeavor.
“We don’t just measure the closet and leave,” explains Katie Zanzarov, designer at California Closets. “We sit down and design their spaces together; we utilize this wonderful 3D CAD software where we create a virtual model of their space so they can really get a sense of what their design can look like. We really take pride in working with them one-on-one to design their dream closet in the comfort of their own home.”
If you’re looking for a place to start, Zanzarov shares her expert-approved tips for bringing an elevated attitude to your closet—regardless of its size.
Take an audit of your space.
No two closets are created equal, so you’ll want to be mindful of how you utilize your layout. “Prioritizing what they need is very important because there has to be enough space to move around,” she says. “The last thing we want is to overcrowd a closet.” As a rule of thumb, Zanzarov says everyone should be able to stand in front of their drawers and shelves so they can have a clear view of their inventory. (That’s exactly why she recommends that clients do not put shelves in hard-to-reach corners.) Fortunately, many of California Closet’s offerings such as built-in hampers and angled shoe shelves make it possible to make the most of every square inch.
Focus on materials.
It doesn’t matter how many drawers and shelves you have: High-quality materials create the backbone of your closet. Zanzarov noted how California Closets’ material is durable-yet-dapper melamine, which can be completely customized to match her clients’ specific needs. “We offer a wide range of colorways and take pride in the consistency of our products,” she says. “We offer a lifetime guarantee, so should you and your family’s needs change, we are here to help adjust and evolve your closet system.”
Find a home for your belongings.
Racks? Shelves? Drawers? Zanzarov says it all depends on your specific needs. According to the designer, delicate clothing like dresses and suits are typically hung up while casual pieces like pants and sweaters are folded on shelves. Meanwhile, activewear and undergarments can discreetly hide in drawers. A wall of vertical shoe storage is essential, and Zanzarov recommends their Everstyle inserts for jewelry and sunglasses, which can be easily adjusted to suit your needs. (These inserts come in luxurious vegan leather with metal hardware in a variety of colors.) “We have glass-lit shelves where people can put their beautiful handbags, high heels, and collectibles that they’d like to see on display,” she adds.
Let there be light.
Never underestimate the power of great lighting. For Zanzarov, the right fixture can bring a boutique flair to your closet. “We offer several different LED lighting fixtures custom built into your closet so you can easily see everything,” she shares. “From pole lighting, to puck lighting, to lighting within the actual partition and even base lighting gives any closet that huge wow factor.” Another thing to love? Unlike a lamp, which may take up some precious square footage, California Closets’ lighting works seamlessly within your footprint so your clothes and accessories can shine.
Provide a personal touch.
Since your wardrobe is filled with a unique blend of clothes and accessories, why should your physical closet be any different? Zanzarov encourages readers to recreate a feeling of shopping with a floor-length mirror, seating area, and an island to lay out your ensemble. “You can even put drawers in the island to maximize your storage,” the designer says. However, if you’re short on space, she recommends sprucing up your closet with knobs and pulls.
For Zanzarov, it’s those small touches and strategic storage solutions that can make a closet pretty and practical. “Everybody wants a beautiful closet, but we also take a lot of pride in getting people organized,” she explains. “[Tidying up] is such an integral part of daily life. We find that helping our clients get organized brings more peace and order into their homes, and we love being a part of that process with them.”
