Looking to craft an in-person experience, where the design curious can sink into her signature style and relaxed, yet elevated vibe, designer Lindsey Colhoun opened the doors to HAVEN by Lindsey Colhoun Design, a shop that’s all about tactile warmth and understated elegance. HAVEN allows devotees of Colhoun’s curated eye to take the look home piece by piece or gift it to pass on the appreciation of a life enjoyed.
Here, the designer shares her vision for the in-store experience.
A warm welcome…
I wanted people to walk in and feel as if they had stepped into a living space rather than a retail environment. Each vignette is styled like a real room, so customers can imagine how pieces live together and how our design process works. We have a custom kitchen cabinet in the shop and highlight many of our favorite cabinet hardware, curtains, paint colors and other design details. The atmosphere is intentionally slow and inviting, with no harsh lighting and no clutter, so browsing feels like a sensory experience. It’s filled with items I love, from candles to dish towels, vintage furnishings, and all things home and lifestyle related.
Modern meets vintage…
The mix of new and vintage is at the heart of the shop. We source one-of-a-kind finds from markets and estate sales and show them alongside new pieces from makers we admire. I also love to spotlight small artisans whenever possible. That balance keeps the collection fresh and authentic.
The LCD signature style…
Neutrals create calm and let texture, shape and craftsmanship take center stage. I lean into earthy tones such as taupes, browns and greens. They’re timeless and also forgiving. They work across different homes and styles. Personally, I find a neutral backdrop allows life — the people, the food on the table and the art on the wall — to shine. That is what makes it resonate with me and with our clients.
Sourcing and inspiration…
This is an extension of my design practice, so the curation feels very personal. I’m constantly sourcing through travel, trade shows and quiet corners of the internet and pulling inspiration from architecture, fashion and nature. I’m drawn to pieces that have a story and that echo the understated elegance of our design projects. The products in the shop such as oils, candles and lotions are all scents and items I personally use in my own home and life. I buy everything in the shop as if I’m buying for myself. With my design projects, I buy with clients in mind, but the shop is very personal and reflective of me.
