Based in her New York City design studio since 2018, Kylie K. Bass of KKB Interiors gravitates towards clean lines and organic shapes, a technique that is revealed in a transcendent residential project she worked on in Short Hills, New Jersey. Using a soft touch to layer different textures and materials, she imbued a stately Colonial with serene colors and refined furnishings. Her core belief that everyone should come home to a place they love is a common theme in the Hamptons, New York, Connecticut and New Jersey residences she conceives.
Gwen Donovan: From its huge center island to the mix of white and natural wood cabinets, the kitchen is exceptional; what was the client’s design direction for this welcoming space?
Kylie K. Bass: The client wanted her kitchen to feel transitional, clean, fresh and inviting, but also very durable since she loves to cook and host. With such a spacious kitchen, we thought it would be beautiful to use two different cabinet finishes — a mix of a crisp but warm white and natural wood. This brought in some nice contrast and added a bit of visual interest without feeling too busy. We also selected a gorgeous quartzite for the countertops, which brings a touch of elegance and beautifully complements the zellige backsplash tile. The mix of finishes and textures creates a bright and airy vibe, while the warmth of the wood keeps it cozy and welcoming. Plus, the large center island is perfect for hosting family and friends!
GD: The fireside family room is another gracious space, which design elements speak to you?
KKB: It’s hard to pick just one — I love everything about how this room came together! The stone fireplace is definitely a standout, with its subtle yet impactful limestone mantle on top. The oversized flatweave wool rug anchors the space and brings a cozy texture underfoot, while the traditional stripe chairs add a classic, traditional charm. The custom built-ins provide a perfect blend of storage and display, keeping the room functional and stylish. To me, each of these elements creates a space that feels warm, inviting, and perfect for family time.
GD: A private balcony adjoins the spacious primary suite, while the wood-accented primary bath gives Edwardian vibes — tell us how this amazing owners’ retreat came together.
KKB: Throughout the home, our goal was to create spaces that felt timeless and grounded, and the primary suite was no exception. Although the rooms were large, we wanted to incorporate elements that made them feel inviting. In the primary bath, the homeowner envisioned an accent wall to add character between the WC and shower entrance, behind the tub. She fell in love with a stunning mosaic pattern that we used on the floor, so we decided to complement it with a wood accent wall. This choice added a warmth and a traditional feel that perfectly balanced the space. We collaborated closely on selecting the pattern and finish, making it a true labor of love for everyone involved. The result is a retreat that’s not only beautiful but also feels like a special, personalized escape for them!
GD: In the nursery, bright blue walls, patterned carpeting and a midcentury-style light fixture create an environment that’s easy to grow into. Which aspect really stood out to you?
KKB: One of my favorite aspects of this room is how seamlessly the mix of materials came together. The blue walls set such a cheerful tone, and the patterned carpeting adds a playful yet refined touch. But what truly ties the space together is the homeowner’s artwork, bringing in beautiful hues and a personal touch that makes the room feel special.
GD: What made this design project especially memorable?
KKB: This new construction project was such a wonderful collaboration, truly showcasing one of my favorite aspects of my work: getting to know the families I design for and being part of their journey, which made this experience even more meaningful!
