Komon Architekti Offers A Return To Dignity For A Historic Residence

The historical Villa Bianca, designed by architect Jan Kotěra in 1910-11, has undergone numerous modifications since its construction, but none more radical than the recent and profound renovation by Komon Architekti. The interior, in contrast to the historical exterior, reflected the turn-of-the-millennium period and no original elements were preserved through the years of work. The new interior design from Komon is contemporary without a historicizing approach, focused on establishing a connection to the stately architecture of the house. The dialogue between the old and the new revolves around architectural authenticity and form following function, just as it did more than a century ago.

Direct references to the era of the house’s creation are made through the choice of materials and the selection of standalone furniture. Darkly oiled oak for parquet floors and furniture, along with accents in natural brass, will acquire a natural patina over time. Plaster finishes on walls have a matte white coat, matching the lacquer on doors and built-in furniture, and allowing for a play of light and shadow.

The kitchen has been moved into one common southern-oriented space with the dining and living areas. While embracing austerity, the clean lines and bright white cabinetry don’t read as cold, thanks to the warmth of the natural materials.

The investors’ passion for glass is reflected in the abundance of mirrors, glass fixtures, and a long windowsill in the living room, designed as a showcase for glass objects. Beyond materiality, texture too comes into play to soften living spaces and add visual interest.

These subtle but effective choices from Komon Architekti offer a return to dignity for a historic residence.
