Prepare For The Inaugural Los Angeles Design Weekend With This Special Preview

Next week, the Los Angeles Design Weekend kicks off its inaugural year with a weekend-long series of neighborhood-centric events in Downtown Los Angeles and the surrounding Northeast neighborhoods. From Friday, June 21 through Sunday, June 23, LA Design Weekend invites visitors to explore the city’s expansive design community through activations, exhibitions, and parties in places like DTLA, Silver Lake, Cypress Park, and more.

LA Design Weekend is led by Holland Denvir, the founder of the Los Angeles creative sales agency Denvir Enterprises, and cultivated by a decentralized group of design volunteers. Together, the LADW team aims to celebrate the city’s creative energy and represent the community that created it.

“After attending Guadalajara Art Weekend this past February, I felt that its decentralized, grassroots approach was the perfect jumping-off point for us to create an event using the same ethos,” says Denvir. “With its mixture of activations, interactive art features, and non-competing events that progressed naturally throughout the day, I was inspired to bring this vision to LA.”

Preview some of the talented artists and makers on display June 21st-23rd, below.

Friday, June 21st:

BDCC + LA Chair
Kick off your LA Design Weekend experience with Back Door Coffee Club and LA Chair. Here, Eric Trine has selected chairs by other Los Angeles-based chair makers to facilitate a “Normative Seating Experience”, where folks can move about the space, have some coffee, a pastry or two, and sit and touch and feel the chairs.

Object Permanence
Co-curated by Leah Ring and Holland Denvir, Object Permanence is an exhibition series that was created with the intent of highlighting Los Angeles design talent. Each iteration of Object Permanence revolves around individual interpretations of a specific prompt, keeping the brief loose and allowing participants the freedom to express their vision and highlight their particular expertise in a broad range of materials. This round, Cookie Jars, will be interpreted by designers Cedric Mitchell, Cindy Hsu Zell, Entler, and Hannah Go and more.

Francisco Alcazar
Fashion designer Francisco Alcazar’s work will be on display for LA Design Weekend visitors. The zero waste designer’s clothes embody the traditional concept of a circular economy where materials, fabrics, and used clothes have multiple life cycles reducing the negative impact on the environment.

Saturday, June 22nd:

Hanneke Lourens | Corrugated Collection
Northern California-based Hanneke Lourens will be displaying her debut furniture collection, the Corrugated Collection, at Winston’s – a gallery located at 2701 N Broadway in the LA neighborhood of Lincoln Heights. A “love letter to South Africa,” the pieces are inspired by the corrugated metal sheets seen in the urban landscapes of Lourens’ birthplace.

Susan Maddox
Visit the open studio of Susan Maddux, a Los Angeles-based painter, sculptor and textile artist. Her work transforms water-based paintings into wall sculptures using meticulous folding and collage. Come by to see large scale folded work, canvas collage, and a selection of in-studio-only sale pieces.

CarbonShack | Casa Zero house tours
CarbonShack Design is driven by the philosophy that to create a truly low impact building, design must empower occupants to be stewards of the environment. This house serves as a case study, a comprehensive prototype for a new definition of green building. Tours run from 3:00 – 6:00 pm.

Sunday, June 23rd:

Hollyhock House tours
Celebrating the debut of Summer Seating: LAUN & BZIPPY at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, self-guided tours run from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. A conversation with LAUN founders Molly Purnell and Rachel Bullock and BZIPPY’s Bari Ziperstein, moderated by Hollyhock House Projects Curator Leigh Wishner, follows from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.

Cummings Estate x To The Trade | Creativity Curated
In a collaboration between Chet Architecture and To The Trade, the Cummings Estate will showcase creatives across several mediums, allowing them to display their work among innovative rooms.
