With a focus on simple designs and sustainability, Courtney Krug created AT300NELSON after being inspired by a trip to the Tetons and Joshua Tree National Park. And her free spirit and love for wandering has certainly inspired her work. “The places I traveled to and the people I met helped me find the encouragement I needed to pursue life as a textile designer and business owner,” Krug explains. “I believe color and print are capable of leaving lasting impacts on the people around them, and while everyone will have a different interpretation, there is something beautiful to be found in our discovery.” Learn more about how Courtney Krug describes herself and her work in this week’s Maker Monday.

These beautiful Clairvoyant feather pillows are inspired by Indigenous designs.
Andrew Joseph: What is the last book you read?
Courtney Krug: “The Education of a Reluctant Businessman” by Yvon Chouinard. I love books but I struggle with sitting down for long periods of time, i.e. reading something cover-to-cover. My mind and my body have a hard time slowing down. This book was the exception for me. I couldn’t put it down. I have immense respect for Yvon Chouinard and the brand that he’s built. He built a brand, a company and a lifestyle that is better for its people and the planet, while working through the inevitable growing pains that come along with that. I am captivated by his thought processes and innovation in terms of materials, functionality, process, activism and giving back. Who they are, what they do and how they do it translates so holistically throughout the brand. Patagonia’s business model and Yvon’s courage and determination have inspired me to run a responsible business, and more importantly that it is possible to do so.
AJ: If you could guest star on any TV show -on or off air- what show would you guest star in?
CK: The Golden Girls. Those gals had moxie. I could guest star as Blanche’s granddaughter visiting from Atlanta… I like all of the gals but that storyline could work.
AJ: What are three words to describe where you live?
CK: Secluded, lush, haven.

Made from linen and cotton these Capistrano’s pillows add a unique feel while being both luxurious and comfortable.
AJ: What are your ideal weekend plans?
CK: Escaping in Klaus (our Unimog) with Jake and the critters, headed to anywhere unknown. We’re mapping out a route to the Guadalupe’s but that may take more than a weekend.
AJ: How would you describe your personal style?
CK: Considered yet functional. I love to throw in something architectural like a jacket. I want everything to work together but not be forced. I am attracted to fashion design and the theater of the runway but do not want to be limited by current trends.
AJ: What would your dream project or dream client be right now?
CK: My current dream project/client is to work with Sarah Sherman Samuel. I am attracted to her use of color, material, architectural furniture pieces and overall style. She mixes elements in an unexpected yet organic fashion. I would LOVE for my designs to be featured in some of her projects.
AJ: Are you a pet person? Why either way? Dogs or cats?
CK: Absolutely! I prefer dogs but do not have anything against cats. After our first rescue Akita, we knew it was the breed for us. There are so many in rescue, there’s no looking back. Their loyalty and affection is fierce, and they are so much fun to love. We currently have two rescue Akitas- Katy and Henry. They are our life.

The Capistrano pillow comes in many different colors including this Dark Saffron and Halcyon, and when buying the fabric by the yard it can easily be transformed into other fabulous home accessories.
AJ: How would you define your work in three words
CK: Open, intentional and sustainable.
AJ: How do you define beauty?
CK: Beauty is an intersection of the tangible and the intangible.
AJ: What’s a new hobby/skill that you have learned recently?
CK: Learning to use GPS and old-school map reading techniques. The thing about the roads less traveled and truly getting away often translates to zero cell service. That’s not all bad.
About The Maker | Free-spirited, independent and constantly inspired by the ever-changing journey of one’s life, Courtney Krug founded textile design firm AT300NELSON as the result of her many experiences and the winding road she took to get there. “In college, I moved around from major to major, trying to figure out where I fit,” explains Krug, a Northeast Florida-native and owner and founder of AT300NELSON. “I started with drawing and painting, then moved to graphic design and then on to fashion design… Then, I crashed, burned and I literally threw everything away. I needed time away from all of it, so I took it…and in the process, let myself begin to dream, again.”
AT300NELSON takes Courtney’s love of color and pattern and offers something tangible for all to enjoy with one-of-a-kind fabric by-the-yard and made-to-order pieces. The fibre and dry goods line is founded on creative expression, connection and mindfulness with a desire to be a part of the design process every step of the way. Each textile is designed to add a special touch to your home, office or creative space.
