Maker Monday: An Aspire Exclusive Interview With Davina Ogilvie

Davina Ogilvie is the founder of New York-based custom window treatments company Wovn Home. Growing up in Bangkok, Thailand, Ogilvie was always surrounded by beautiful window treatments and decorative elements. When moving to New York, she was surprised by the lack of embellishment that is typical in the Western design sphere. Drawing on her experience in the fashion industry, Ogilvie launched Wovn home in 2019 to fill the need for high-quality, exciting custom window treatments. Learn more about Davina Ogilvie in this week’s Maker Monday.

Andrew Joseph: Which room in the house do you find yourself working from the most? Why? How does this inform your thoughts about architecture?
Davina Ogilvie: Outside of my home office, I find myself working in my living room the most. It has a great flow and is very open with abundant natural light that feels calming, which helps me focus. I live in a classic prewar building in New York full of original architectural details and the ones in the living room are particularly lovely so I take them all in as I work and go throughout my day. When the architecture is right, everything else falls in line.

AJ: What’s one ingredient you put in everything?
DO: Hot Sauce! Especially Sriracha which takes me back to my days growing up in Bangkok and the spicy cuisine that I love.

AJ: What’s inspiring you in life (in the industry) right now?
DO: I find the brand collaborations Wovn is working on so energizing and inspiring. I’m able to work with people that I share a lot in common with, but they come at the process from a different angle. I love the education and simply the fun of it. With things starting to open up from COVID, it’s been wonderful to meet and interact with people in the industry in person again. I’m newly invigorated and excited about what’s ahead.

AJ: What’s the best thing that happened to you this month?
DO: The month’s highlight was definitely the opening of the Brooklyn Designer Showhouse. Wovn Home was a sponsor, and it was a total delight and pleasure to work with such a breadth of talent to create custom window treatments for their spaces. Then actually walking through and seeing how every distinct room came together was incredible; when you opened each door it was like entering a completely different jewel box.

AJ: If you had one more hour in the day what would you do with it?
DO: Cooking instead of ordering food online! Running a business and raising children takes up most of my time, and I’ve fallen out the habit of cooking at home. I remind myself that one of the pleasures of living in New York is having access to great food anytime and anywhere—that helps ease the guilt!

AJ: How would you define your work in three words?
DO: How about three phrases?! Wovn Home is bespoke but playful; luxurious but approachable; and classic but current.

About the Maker | Davina Ogilvie is founder of Wovn Home, a direct-to-consumer custom window treatments company based in New York. After growing up in Bangkok, Thailand surrounded by beautiful custom window treatments, Davina was surprised to find a lack of options to choose from when she was decorating her own Manhattan apartment. When she turned to local upholstery shops, she found they were incredibly expensive and also required months-long lead times. On the other hand, big box retailers only offered standard sizes that were often poor quality. Rather than choosing either of these less-than-desirable options, she decided to use her previous experience from working in the New York fashion industry to create her own custom window treatments. From this experience, she created and launched Wovn Home in September 2019, offering designer-quality custom window treatments at an accessible price point.
