Andrew Joseph: Can you tell us about a design trend you are excited about?
Liz Barbatelli: For me, far above trends is the innovative evolution of linens that is exciting, such as new ways of finishing product and new types of materials that are being used to create luxurious, very tactile, interesting-to-the-touch fabrics. It’s a linen designer’s dream to have a widening array of high-level design possibilities with the development of super fine cottons – how they are getting spun and woven and finished – and the advancements with bamboo-microfiber sheeting. Innovative textures and high-quality comfort are so important for creating truly customized experiences in unexpected ways.

AJ: What design trends do you think will be popular in the coming years?
LB: I believe we will see a continual, desired return to functional beauty in the design world at large in the coming years…and how I look forward to this! Purposeful beauty creates transformative experiences and elevates every touchpoint in our lives.
AJ: How do you balance functionality and aesthetics in your designs?
LB: As a true believer in the marriage of form and function, I am always striving to change people’s perspectives about what can be both beautiful and useful in their daily lives. For example, when I create a custom bedding linen program for a client I start by learning about their personal wants and needs. Once I understand the more intimate, comfort preferences this illuminates the selection of fabrics and design approach and allows me to integrate all the lifestyle choices into the preferred aesthetic. There is always a beautifully made and thoughtfully designed product available that serves an everyday moment.
AJ: What’s your favorite cocktail?
LB: Aperol Spritz. In the summertime. Anywhere… but preferably in Italy.

LB: Matching colors to artwork!
AJ: Style (or design) icon and why?
LB: My mother is and was such a huge influence on me, with her significant beauty, style, smarts, and creative talents. She was an artist and could paint, sing, draw and design furnishings and furniture. She was a great lady and is a forever icon in my life.
AJ: How do you approach designing for a specific location or cultural influence?
LB: Through observation, intent listening, and research. Whether I’m helping to finish the creation of a space by enhancing the design in partnership with an interior designer or working directly with a private client to curate a residential collection for a house, aircraft, or yacht, I consider every project a unique environment that comes with a discovery of boundaries that allow you to be wonderfully creative while holistically elevating the day-to-day living experience.

AJ: Best advice you’d give your teenage self?
LB: Be yourself, follow your instincts and be selective with whom you spend time – time is the greatest luxury in life.
AJ: Can you describe a project where you had to work with a specific theme or motif?
LB: Many of the projects I work on are in complement to a design that is already in place as I often collaborate with interior designers for residential and hospitality clients. Based on the overall and individual room aesthetics, I design and curate motifs and decorative accents for bedding, bath, table, and entire linen programs that are engagingly part of the interior storytelling.
