Maker Monday: An Aspire Exclusive Interview With Rocky Rochon

Rocky Rochon Studio encompasses the eponymous founder’s design business, as well as his line of furnishings called Body Parts, and his custom paint line called The Paint Laboratory. Rocky’s background as a designer and entrepreneur is rich in interior design and interior architecture, with “problem solving” at the heart of his process with clients, as well as being the driving force behind his paint and furnishing lines.

He founded The Paint Laboratory because no other paint line solved the evergreen issue of the play between light and color, nor offered the accuracy of a stepped color palette he felt was missing in the industry. As its tagline notes, “Architects of Paint. Engineers of Color”, the Paint Laboratory has also formulated unequaled proprietary finishes such as suedes, Endura Flat, and metallic finishes: copper-, lead- and especially steel-infused (the newest) finishes which bring depth and contrast to a room.

Andrew Joseph: What is something you hope to see trending in design in the future?
Rocky Rochon: I’m hoping we are trending toward people taking charge of expressing their uniqueness in their environments.

AJ: What’s your wakeup ritual?
RR: Up slow at 8am, and then the NY Times crossword puzzle in the tub.

AJ: If you weren’t a designer, you’d be a ….?
RR: I’d be a doctor, because I like fixing…

AJ: What are three words to describe where you live?

AJ: What makes you angry?
RR: Entitlement, selfishness, and close-mindedness.

AJ: What’s something you always travel with?
RR: The same leather duffel…I travel lean.

AJ: Are you a good cook? If so, what’s your specialty?
RR: I love cooking. It is the pleasure of preparation, the creativity that comes with the choices in the moment, and the gratification of putting a smile on someone’s face when they’re eating it. My specialty is the unknown thing I’m going to do next.

AJ: Has your mindset changed into 2021/2022? In what ways?
RR: I’ve become increasingly aware of my mortality, and the importance of getting it right.

AJ: If you could live in any home in a movie or television series, what would it be?
RR: Any of Maurizio Gucci’s homes in “House of Gucci”, especially his last Milano apartment.

AJ: Style (or design) icon?
RR: Axel Vervoordt and Philippe Starck

AJ: How would you define your work in three words?
RR: Innovative, eclectic, and client/project-driven.

AJ: What do you find yourself daydreaming about most these days?
RR: My next adventure.

About The Maker | Rocky hails from Seattle but is regularly in Los Angeles, New York and Palm Springs. Prior to his Seattle and Los Angeles studio businesses, Rocky honed his interior architecture experience in the Bay Area, in large commercial design firms, designing everything from high-end residences to hotels to high-tech interiors, learning the principles of urban design and city planning along the way. Rocky garnered a number of AIA Awards for his work during these years and earned a national award for his work on the Apple company store and library, after which Steve Jobs hired his firm to design their Executive Offices.

Throughout his career, he has established a design process that reaches far beyond the aesthetic – whether it’s for his design services, his paint and furnishings lines, or his studio of collected décor pieces. Helping people consider what problem is at hand and then solving that problem is where he excels most. Peeling back the layers is Rocky’s favorite part.
