Maker Monday: An Aspire Exclusive Interview With Stacy Garcia

Since 2004, Stacy Garcia has teamed with celebrated creators to deliver eclectic collections of interior products. Garcia’s New York design firm creates products that highlight the iconic city’s aesthetics, including the firm’s most recent launch – a wallcovering collection paying homage to New York’s streets, buildings, and gardens. Garcia’s designs maintain a contemporary flare, a reflection on her own present-minded and amicable style. Introducing this week’s Maker Monday, Stacy Garcia.

Andrew Joseph: Best advice you’d give your teenage self?
Stacy Garcia: Be patient. You are beautiful. Stop worrying about what everyone else thinks. Own your power. Still great advice today!

Andrew: What are you most proud of?
Stacy: My marriage and my children — and having the courage to go off on my own in my 20s and start a business.

Andrew: What’s the best thing that happened to you this month?
Stacy: Having my exclusive wallcovering collection with Stacy Garcia | New York and Koroseal be released! It’s been thrilling to see this product, inspired by the sights and sounds of my home of New York City, come to life. I started working with Koroseal before the pandemic — and like so many of us, we had no clue what was going to happen. But I’m really proud of how we were able to maintain the strength of our partnership, albeit virtually, and create vibrant, fresh patterns alluding to everything from New York City’s grid to its spray-painted walls, outdoor parks and skyscrapers. This city saw a lot the past year, and it feels incredible to have worked with Koroseal to create something that celebrates it. Now, I’m happy that the rest of the world is able to see what we dreamt up at Koroseal’s factory presses.

Andrew: What would your dream project or dream client be right now?
Stacy: I would LOVE to design the set for a Broadway show. I love the theatre and am so happy that Broadway is finally re-open! Designing a stage set would be pure fantasy!

Andrew: If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
Stacy: If I could be any animal, I would be an eagle. They are a symbol of beauty, courage and grace. The idea of soaring high above the earth seems amazing. Though I’ve often been described as a chameleon, maybe because I change my look so often but hopefully because I relate to people from so many walks of life.

Andrew: What’s one thing people don’t know about you?
Stacy: I’m very open about it, but many people don’t know that I wear wigs. I embraced them as a fashion statement years ago after suffering from hair loss. It has become my signature.

Andrew: What’s your design pet peeve?
Stacy: Fake flowers!

Andrew: Style (or design) icon?
Stacy: Moira Rose, and sometimes David!

Andrew: What would you like to be remembered for?
Stacy: The love I gave to people and how I made them feel. I try to bring my best self to the party every day. A big part of that is being present for the people I am with. Creating room and space for others to shine and for having so much love and respect for myself and others that they feel safe and at ease in my presence.
