Andrew Joseph: Can you describe your design philosophy in three words?
Una Malan: Elegant; Timeless; Sartorial.

AJ: What was the last book you read and how did it inspire you?
UM: While it wasn’t the last book I read, “The Soul of a Horse” by Joe Camp had a profound impact on my approach to horsemanship. It made me really reconsider how I connect with horses, emphasizing that it’s not just about training but about truly understanding their natural instincts and behaviors, which changed my relationship with my horse immeasurably to a level I hadn’t known before.

AJ: What is your favorite type of furniture to design?
UM: I’m excited to expand our casegoods collections, because they offer endless possibilities for incorporating subtle yet impactful details in the materials. Every texture, finish, and joinery decision becomes an opportunity to create something unique and refined.

AJ: How do you incorporate sustainability into your designs?
UM: We incorporate sustainability into our designs by partnering with the finest mills in Italy and Europe for our debut fabric collection, Capsule by Una Malan. These mills share our commitment to environmentally responsible practices, ensuring that the materials are crafted with sustainability in mind. From the sourcing of raw materials to the craftsmanship, every step reflects our dedication to creating luxurious, timeless pieces with a reduced environmental impact.

With its plush cushions, inviting curves, and a tactile wood base that adds an unexpected grounding element, the Tulum Sofa looks as soft as a whisper and feels like sinking into a cloud.

AJ: What is your favorite place to find inspiration?
UM: Travel, travel, travel, travel, travel.

AJ: Can you tell us about a design trend you are excited about?
UM: I’m not typically drawn to trends or fads, but something that really excites me is seeing clients’ increasing desire to learn more about the makers behind the products. With so many mass-produced ‘high-end’ items flooding the market, there’s a deepening return to, and appreciation for, understanding the craftsmanship, the stories behind the pieces, and the personal connection to the passion and intention that goes into creating them. That shift is what inspires me.
