From its inception in 2002, MATRIZdesign has quickly become one of the most renowned Furniture Labs in Argentina. Under the creative direction of Architect Viviana Melamed, MATRIZdesign produces contemporary, innovative and high-quality collections of furniture, upholstery and lamps. Based on the idea of merging urban life attributes with nature’s qualities, MATRIZdesign uses noble woods presented in its raw form as well as intervened metals with handmade patinas, dyed leather, natural fiber fabrics and coating applied on a variety of surfaces. All the processes are handmade, high quality, produced in Argentina and exported globally. Take a look at these award-winning pieces in today’s Maker Monday.

Andrew Joseph: Can you describe your design philosophy in three words?
Viviana Melamed: Contemporary, joyful, materialism.

AJ: What is your favorite type of furniture to design
VM: My favorite type of furniture to design are benches, I often find myself drawing new ones, the little details that they entail, a joint, the material they involve… the last one that I had recently designed had ash-tinted wood, bronze sable metal, leather and negresco quartzite, all of them for an exquisite piece.

The Land Row cabinet is another piece in the EDGE collection. The top, sides, and drawer handles are made of a marble that compliments the wood finish.

AJ: How do you approach designing for a specific location or cultural influence?
VM: We are specialists and get very creative when facing the challenge of designing pieces for specific locations. We usually collaborate with interior design firms, as they know we find our best creative ability when dreaming, drawing and producing for them.

AJ: What’s the weirdest thing a client has ever asked you?
VM: Once I received a commission where the client said they wanted everyone to faint when they touched my design. That is high expectations, right?

AJ: How do you stay organized while working on multiple projects?
VM: We usually are working on multiple projects at the same time, I think that energy is what infuses our day-to-day. I think I couldn’t be working otherwise. When we work on projects, we find so much joy in collaborating with other brands and that keeps us going.
