As the days of the year fade into winter, we’re greeted by effortless silhouettes, muted tones, and the gentle refraction of light. This designer channels this same calm in her interiors, evoking a deeply architectural sense of space, coupled with a masterful attention to detail. Marie Flanigan gives us a peek into her mind in this week’s Designer Friday.
Andrew Joseph – Dream country to work in? Or dream project to take on.
Marie Flanigan – I’ve always wanted to try my talents in Europe, specifically Italy or the UK. I’m drawn to minimalist spaces that celebrate a historic sense of structure and beauty; sharing that vision on an international scale would be a dream. Speaking of, I hear a certain Duke and Duchess are preparing for a baby, and there’s nothing I ’d love more than to design a royal nursery!
Andrew – What ’s your biggest fear in life?
Marie – Regret. Whether it’s a missed opportunity or wishing I had spent more time doing the things I love most, my biggest fear is that I may one day look back and wish I had done things differently. It ’s a fear that encourages self-exploration and it drives me to make the most of each and every day!
Andrew – What’s inspiring you in life (in the industry) right now?
Marie – I am incredibly inspired by the breadth and depth of the digital world! Ideas are being shared at a breakneck pace and everyone ’s invited to join in on the conversation. Social media continues to shatter boundaries, connecting us all and giving people around the world a voice. For creatives, social media offers us the opportunity to reach audiences far beyond our wildest imaginations. It’s making a huge impact on our industry!
Andrew – Best advice you’d give your teenage self?
Marie – You become an average of the five people with whom you spend the most time. Be selective and consider your friendships an opportunity to build your very own Board of Directors. Fill it with people you admire who will encourage and uplift you through life, no matter where your journey takes you!
Andrew – What would you like to be remembered for?
Marie – Helping others weave beauty into their everyday lives.
Andrew – Who is a contemporary inspiration in your field?
Marie – Aerin Lauder. She is a gifted entrepreneur who has been influential to the growth of Estee Lauder, while also building her own powerful personal brand. I admire her vision and the way she enhances the lives of people worldwide by doing what she loves most. From her Instagram presence to the products that boast her name, everything she touches turns to beauty.
