Mark Alexander has established a reputation for creating the finest textiles and wallcoverings using natural materials. Led by Head of Brand Mark Butcher, the studio creates fabrics and wallcoverings that are not opulent or fussy, nor led by transient fashion, but are true to the natural materials from which they are made.
New this spring, the brand has unveiled Grasscloth Prints and Grasscloth II — two wallcoverings collections rooted in nature and crafted with an uncompromising pursuit of quality.
Grasscloth Prints
Grasscloth Prints bring together geometric motifs and organic shapes in a curated collection of screen-printed wallcoverings. Made entirely from botanical fibers, these designs celebrate nature’s inherent grace and beauty, striking an artful balance between structure and fluidity.
With a true dedication to detail, each design begins as a hand-painted artwork in the Mark Alexander studio. Naïve yet charming patterns are paired with the familiar tactility of abacá and raffia grounds, while jute and arrowroot introduce new depths of texture.
Mark Alexander signatures, Offset and Odyssey, are thoughtfully reimagined with adjusted scale and repetition to perfectly suit the wallcovering format, alongside familiar small-scale designs that capture the essence and artistry of Mark Alexander’s admired Woodblock Prints.
With an eclectic and artistic character, these wallcoverings reflect nature’s intrinsic imperfections and beautifully diverse textures.
Grasscloth II
Eight meticulously crafted designs emphasize the beauty of these materials through a selection of timeless plains, textured semi-plains, and rich, tactile weaves, brought into harmonious balance.
Grasscloth II is crafted using fast-growing, responsibly sourced fibers, with each wallcovering meticulously handwoven on traditional looms, preserving the art of craftsmanship. Adding to its charm and complexity, Grasscloth II introduces further innovative, textured materials such as bamboo and arrowroot, a type of seagrass, newly incorporated into the Mark Alexander repertoire.
Through varied finishing processes, each design finds its unique character, some are gently color-washed, others yarn-dyed or piece-dyed, resulting in a palette that feels both naturally refined and richly layered.
