Ski In And Ski Out Of This Montana Home Masterfully Designed By Alder & Tweed

Perched atop the Rocky Mountains within the exclusive Yellowstone Club community in Big Sky, Montana, this vacation home is a breathtaking showcase of Alder & Tweed’s design expertise. Designed for a family seeking a luxurious yet functional retreat, this residence serves as a testament to Alder & Tweed’s commitment to blending form, function, and natural beauty.

Having collaborated with this client on two previous homes, Design Director Lindsey Treasure and the A&T team brought a deep understanding of the family’s tastes and needs to the project. “The trust we built through those projects played a pivotal role,” says Treasure. “It allowed us greater creative freedom and the ability to strike a balance between bold experimentation and timeless design.”

This idyllic duplex boasts six bedrooms, an office/gym, two laundry rooms, a rec room, and two bars—all designed with both comfort and practicality in mind. The home’s ski-in, ski-out access offers seamless transitions between the luxury interiors and the powdery slopes, embodying the Yellowstone Club’s unparalleled lifestyle.

Inspired by the majestic Rocky Mountain setting, the overall vision for this home was to embrace light, airy tones and natural materials that harmonize with the breathtaking landscape. “Large windows were a cornerstone of the design,” explains Treasure. “Unobstructed views of the stunning mountainscapes were intentionally considered as an integral part of the living experience.”

The kitchen, which features custom rift-cut oak cabinetry, Taj Mahal Quartzite countertops in a leathered finish, and a full suite of Subzero Wolf appliances, epitomizes this harmony of design. “The kitchen is a true cook’s haven,” notes Treasure, highlighting its spacious design and thoughtful details like the abundance of integrated storage throughout.

In the dining area, a Pearl chandelier from Restoration Hardware provides a touch of decadence, while antique mirror panels in the bar’s backsplash create an illusion of added space.

The adjacent recreation room is a bold departure, featuring a Rubik geometric teal and gold wallpaper and custom woolen plaid upholstery. “We knew the clients would be open to something adventurous here,” says Treasure. “It’s a space designed to bring people together for ping pong, movies, or just relaxing.”

The primary suite provides a serene escape, with a custom fabric-wrapped headboard in Jiun Ho’s Seronera upholstery, integrated side tables, and a functional desk for the husband’s work needs. The spa-like bathroom, clad in veined ecru marble with black accents, features a standalone black marble tub perfectly positioned with a viewfinder window that takes the landscape and presents it as if it is a framed artwork.

Guest accommodations were tailored to the client’s family dynamics, with two bunk bed rooms for grandchildren and three additional guest rooms for adults. The bunk rooms — playful yet sophisticated — were custom-designed and milled to evoke a “sleepover” vibe while maintaining Alder & Tweed’s signature elegance. Speciality wallpapers by Holly Hunt feature subtle geometric patterns that add depth and texture to the bedrooms.

Smart technology throughout the home adds function to the luxury. Automated blinds, dimmable ambient lighting, and a state-of-the-art sound system are some of the main features. For added convenience, a built-in Miele coffee station (second to the one built in the kitchen design) was installed in the primary bedroom. “Every detail was thoughtfully crafted for easy living,” says Treasure. “It’s a true sanctuary.”

As vacation homes continue to rise in popularity, Treasure sees a growing trend toward bold creativity and deeper connections to nature. “People are more adventurous with design in these spaces,” she observes. “From striking patterns to unique textures, vacation homes allow for playful creativity while maintaining a sense of warmth and comfort.”
