When Esther and Murillo Schattan founded Ornare in 1986 in Sao Paulo, the goal was simple: To elevate and enhance cabinetry with innovative technology and unparalleled quality. Now, nearly 40 years later, the duo is preparing to pass the torch to their children. Below, Esther discusses keeping Ornare in the family.
When was the company founded and by whom?
Esther Schattan: Ornare was founded 38 years ago by Murillo and me. We initially focused on cabinets and closets, which allowed us to gain significant experience, and later expanded into other areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
Tell us about the family involvement today.
ES: Our children, Pitter and Stefan, are poised to fully take over the company, continuing into the second generation.
Lunch breaks together or separately:
ES: Usually separate, as our schedules often differ.
Why is this the business your family is in?
ES: After working in the market for years, we identified a gap in quality solutions for kitchens and bathrooms. With this realization, we introduced products that elevated design and functionality in both Brazil and the USA.
What is the best part of being involved in your family’s business?
ES: The best part is sharing our passion with family and long-standing collaborators, building a legacy of quality, design, and relationships that impact our clients’ lives.
Vacations together or separately:
ES: A mix — sometimes with just us as a couple, other times with our children and their families.
Cherished family business milestone:
ES: Seeing our solutions quickly adopted by top projects both in Brazil and the United States was a proud moment.
Ten years from now, I hope our family business will …
ES: Be globally recognized, with Pitter and Stefan leading the company and preparing the next generation.
