ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME recently reached out to several leading kitchen and design firms to discover their point of view on top trends and new developments in their industry. Their thoughtful responses delve into what motivates, inspires and excites these design pros, and how that passion ultimately breeds success.
From Reno’s Appliance, we spoke with President and CEO John Cioletti.
John Cioletti: The ability to program recipes into appliances makes them much more user-friendly. This ease of use is best shown by the integration of control panels that emulate the screens on phones and tablets.
ADH: What appliance technology features are your customers are including in their homes?
JC: Many clients are purchasing suites of appliances that use the same technology, trying to simplify purchases. By learning how to operate one unit, they then know how to operate all of them.
ADH: What appliance finishes that are trending now?
JC: Stainless Steel is still king. Many manufacturers are beginning to introduce metal-influenced finishes such as Tuscan Brass, Black Stainless and White.
ADH: What are some features your company offers that you feel are unique?
JC: We have a low-pressure shopping environment in our 16,000 square foot showroom. Reno’s also has a dedicated Customer Service Department to assist clients after their appliances are delivered as well as a trained Installation Team. We have a Corporate Chef on site in our showroom who helps clients with the newer technology available in today’s appliances, and provides recipe ideas and cooking tips.
ADH: Have you noticed any interesting trends or different looks in today’s appliances?
JC: Current trends include a preference for sleek, Euro-inspired styling of appliances as well as injecting color into kitchens through appliances.
ADH: Do your customers tend to buy one appliance at a time or an entire houseful?
JC: We do sell quite a few packages for complete renovations or updates. It’s not necessary, but recommended to stay within a suite of appliances in order to get the best pricing from manufacturers. We are also happy to assist clients with single appliance purchases as they may need them.
ADH: Do you serve commercial customers and builders as well as residential?
JC: We are happy to work with commercial customers, builders and contractors as well as residential clients.
ADH: What is your top-selling appliance or top-selling manufacturer today?
JC: Pro-Ranges and Built-in Refrigeration are the top-selling categories right now.
ADH: If you were purchasing appliances for your own home, what would you choose?
JC: Personally, I like range-tops and separate wall ovens.
ADH: What are some of the most exciting innovations you’ve seen in today’s appliances?
JC: Combi-Steam ovens are increasing in popularity as well as air fryers built into ovens. The new ZIP-water faucet dispensers are very interesting with Hot/Cold/Seltzer options
ADH: Which manufacturers are on the cutting-edge of your industry?
JC: Most manufacturers are embracing connectivity of their appliances, which is the latest thing.
ADH: What 2020 appliance trends do you think will be long-lasting?
JC: Healthier cooking, especially with Combi-Steam ovens, is a trend many clients are interested in.
ADH: Since more people are staying at home these days, have you had more customers wanting to improve their homes with appliance upgrades?
JC: Absolutely.
ADH: What is an appliance you couldn’t live without?
JC: I couldn’t pick one over the other. There’s not an appliance I can’t live without. All are needed and serve a specific purpose, complementing each other as to how my kitchen works.
ADH: How would you describe your work style?
JC: I’m a very hands-on owner. I do my best to lead by example. My employees work with me, not for me. There’s nothing here I haven’t done, or wouldn’t do, to satisfy my customers.
ADH: What is the best or most enjoyable part of your position?
JC: My parents instilled in me that integrity and honesty are the most important things in life and I try to carry that through in everything I do.
ADH: What is the most challenging part of your position?
JC: The most challenging part of my position is balancing taking care of customers with being the President of Reno’s and everything that would entail.
ADH: What is the best piece of professional advice you ever received?
JC: My dad told me to always choose integrity over profitability.

ADH: What makes you most proud when it comes to your business?
JC: The vision I had for Reno’s Appliance has come to fruition with our showroom being second to none and our treatment of customers is second to none. We pride ourselves on offering the best selection, customer service and sales experience. Reno’s Appliance is also proud of the opportunity we have to give back to the community by not only supporting local school fundraisers and events, but also larger philanthropic organizations, especially St. Joseph’s Hospital.
ADH: Tell us a little bit about your company’s history.
JC: Reno’s Appliance was originally founded in 1951 by my father, Reno Cioletti, as Reno’s Radio & TV Shop, the one-stop appliance store located in Paterson, NJ. Over the past 65+ years, the business has transformed into the appliance store we know today. My brothers and I carry on the tradition set forth by our father and bring exceptional customer service each and every day.
