Resplendence of Antipodes: Christos J. Palios Captures The Majestic Underworld

“Isolated in darkness for millions of years, the sunless underworld encompasses majestic ancient formations,” photographer Christos J. Palios writes. “Reminiscent of classical temples, caverns are testaments to nature’s patient hand. From biomorphic shapes to Cubist tableaux of interlocking geology, an otherworldly realm lies before me.”

In his latest series of photographs, Resplendence of Antipodes, Palios digs deep to capture the majesty of the Earth below us. Approaching various caverns and caves as projected 3D maps, the photographer used adapted illumination to reveal an otherwise lost geology of texture, scale, and grandeur. The resulting body of work is staggering and complex.

“Abstract spaces inspire spatial stillness within me, as if in awe after discovering new terrain on alien worlds,” Palios shares. “In ecosystems overburdened by tourism and population growth, I feel intrinsic tension between human intervention and commodification of the natural world. Like historic architecture enduring time, I ponder how the future will experience these resplendent interiors—the antipodes of our brighter above-ground world.”
