Showhouse Spotlight: Alirio Pirela Discusses Plans For The Art Of The Home

aspire design and home proudly presents The Art of the Home, a transformational designer showhouse set within a breathtaking 13,000-square-foot estate in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. This curated exhibition of world-class design, architecture, and fine art will run from September 19 through October 19, with an Opening Night Event to benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, tomorrow, September 17th.

Each Tuesday and Thursday, we’re spotlighting a different designer whose creative vision is shaping this bold, curated home. From behind-the-scenes peeks to personal stories, you’ll get an inside look at the minds reimagining what a home can be. Today’s Showhouse Spotlight features Alirio Pirela.

Alirio Pirela conceives of design as language. Design tells a story. It conveys as much information about the people who use a space as it does about the space itself. A room evokes the past, it creates the present, and sets the tone for the future. Alirio is known for his passion and creativity, so evident in his works. He is committed to both the artistic and technical aspects of any design project, and he brings a broad experience and diverse background to bear in the realization of his innovative vision. The spaces Alirio creates share a classical sensibility. They are brought to life by a unique mix of modern and traditional furnishings, which he often designs himself, from custom sofas and chairs to rugs and accessories, but also imported vintage pieces from his travels.

Tell us about your concept for The Art of the Home — what inspired your approach to the room?
The 1920s characteristic “Roaring” atmosphere/design style that incorporated geometric shapes, bold colors, and streamlined forms, reflecting the modern and forward-looking spirit of the age.

What mood or feeling are you hoping to evoke with this space?
The social life of the time, the more relaxed attitude and the appreciation of arts.

What’s the story behind your design? Is there a narrative or theme guiding your decisions?
Glamorous blend of historical and contemporary influences. Inspiration from the Art Deco movement, incorporating clean lines, symmetrical patterns, and rich materials.

How did you begin the process — was there a single material, color, or image that set everything in motion?
I started with a few Deco pieces I acquired on my travels, and I always want to use some of the rich colors that I normally don’t use. Also inspired by a lot of contemporary art that I will be using in the space.

What can you share about your palette, textures, or material choices? Are there any unexpected combinations we can look forward to?
It will be a mix of Deco Italian and French pieces with a mix of materials from other eras.

Designing for a showhouse comes with a unique kind of freedom. How has that influenced your process so far?
Every time I do a showhouse, I like to use an unexpected mix of eras and materials and showcase my one-of-a-kind finds.

How would you describe your room in three words?
Chic, comfortable, and timeless.

Are you collaborating with any artists, fabricators, or makers on this space?
DEDAR, Lee Industries, Jaipur, Chelsea Art Group, Swadoh, and Porter Teleo.

If your room had a soundtrack, what would it sound like?
Vogue and Justify My Love from Madonna, and La Vie en Rose by Grace Jones.
