Squeaky Clean: 7 Enviable Bathroom Designs

When it comes to great design, there are standards and there are standouts. Each of the designers in this portfolio of baths has found the extra special – and smart – element that gives these rooms that covetable je ne sais quoi.

Cape Town, South Africa
Design: Adri van Zyl, Atelier Interiors
Photography: Greg Cox
Designer Adri van Zyl met homeowner Gary through mutual friends and collaborated on Gary’s own Cape Town home. He’s an artist and collector, and is passionate about color, so van Zyl was able to push the color envelope as far as possible. In a tiny but glamorous powder room, they decided to go all in on fabric and wallcovering on both walls and ceiling. Drawing the eye up, and accenting the touches of apricot in the wallcoverings, is a bright-orange flowerpot pendant.

Milan, Italy
Design: Gian Paolo Venier
Photography: Cortili Photo | Laura Fantacuzzi and Maxime Galati-Fourcade
In this small powder room adjacent to the kitchen in a Milan apartment, designer Gian Paolo Venier, cofounder of OTTO Studio, clad all the walls in shades of gray-and-white tile in a plaid pattern, which instead of overwhelming, creates an optical illusion of space. A floating vintage French faience sink is overhung with a vintage beveled mirror. On the left, cast aluminum hooks are designed by OTTO Studio.

Brentwood, California
Design: Ome Dezin
Photography: Austin Leis
Off the winding route of Mulholland Drive, designers Joelle Kutner and Jesse Rudolph of Ome Dezin envisioned an immersive experience akin to being transported to a private cave for a pool bath that incorporates a complete wet room. To realize their concept, golden-hued Zia Tile was employed to envelop the space, including the walls, floor and surrounding a skylight that casts the room in a naturally sunlit glow. A Ceppo di Gré sink provides a cool contrast to the warmth of the tile, while a vintage, mirrored medicine cabinet adds a touch of history.

Middleburg, Virginia
Design: Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey SCW Interiors, LLC
Photography: Stephen Karlisch
In this powder room, designer Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey continued the same black-and-white custom tile and teak wood millwork that she used in the adjacent pool-house kitchen, to create a cohesive style in a small space. The floating vanity matches the tone of the generous terracotta-colored sink, and makes the space feel larger.

Rząsiny, Poland
Design: Małgorzata Tausz
Photography: Igor Dziedzicki
Stylist: Anna Salak
In this Renaissance palace in Poland – now a boutique guest house – designer Małgorzata Tausz acquired the metal bathtub from filmmakers who were shooting Dorota Kędzierzawska’s film “Dreams Full of Smoke” and found the water boiler on the internet. It has been modernized so that it can be connected to the hot water system. The only surviving 19th-century shutter panel from the front façade was transformed into a handsome towel rack.

Milan, Italy
Design: Maria Vittoria Paggini
Photography: Helenio Barbetta
Maria Vittoria Paggini unveiled the design for her apartment/office/gallery during Milan Design Week, and she explains, “In this house every time you turn around you notice a different detail, particularly through the reflections from small and large mirrors or through actual holes in the wall.” In the bathroom, dramatic yellow-and-white-striped curtains contrast with the turquoise ceiling, evoking images of the Amalfi Coast.

This opulent bathroom design strikes a beautiful balance between lavish embellishments and themes inspired by nature. With its striking, sculptural shape and glossy gold finish that resembles the natural contours of a tree trunk, the Eden Pedestal Sink by Maison Valentina commands attention. Large-scale white and blue ceramic tiles with elaborate, artistic patterns reminiscent of old Portuguese azulejos adorn the surrounding walls, giving the area a touch of traditional elegance and craftsmanship.
