New York-based Studio Seitz is honoring the handiwork of a fading tradition with their newest release: the Heritage Wall Mirror. Each mirror is individually carved with heritage Swiss patterns through the traditional craft of “Schnitzerei” — now only practiced by a handful of artisans in the world. Using solid natural materials, like locally sourced FSC certified solid European Ash, allows the mirror to breathe throughout the seasons, increasing its longevity.
The Heritage Wall Mirror’s silhouette was initially inspired by deconstructing a classic Fahreimer (Alpine milking pail), stripping it back to its essence. The frame’s inside reveals sixteen geometric facets, referencing its construction method, contrasted with a round exterior—all held together by a “belt.”
Co-Founder Kevin Seitz was inspired by the Alpine furniture he grew up with in-and-around Switzerland. “The Alps reflect an honest living — showing what was possible with the limited resources people had around them.” It is this mentality that inspired Studio Seitz to rethink, deconstruct and simplify — using fewer materials in unconventional ways. Giving themselves these restrictions allowed them to be more creative and ultimately bring modernity to traditional craftsmanship.
