Stimulated by an image of Hong Kong at night, with the layered, pattern-making of a thousand densely packed sky-rise buildings, Blainey North’s Man & the Machine collection is a dramatic tribute to industrial style and the human body.
“The notion of mapping, of tracing human movement through a city was the starting point for me,” says North. “Cities are hard, with a multiplicity of levels and differing scales, their repetitive nature generating an edgy beauty. Human bodies, on the other hand, are soft and the movements are random creating these idiosyncratic trails within the urban landscape.”
The collection is comprised of three series – Chasm, Strobe, and Suspension, with over 15 pieces, including lighting and furniture. It is North’s second furniture collection to date, defined with stainless-steel rods, glass, heavy leather and burnished metallic finishes.
“These furniture pieces are serious and heavy,” says North. “They feel like they have been de-coupled from a larger piece of machinery. Yet they are smooth and polished, beautifully proportioned and intriguing.”
